If you connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi part of SSB, then you'll see it in your friends list. See:

You can also play with randoms. That's normally what I do because I usually don't have time to play multiple games in a row, and so don't wanna play with people I know in case I have to leave suddenly :-/
