Albanese to Huckabee: ‘Withholding humanitarian aid is a war crime’
The UN’s special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory has hit back at comments by the US ambassador to Israel, in which he called on Hamas to release Israeli captives held in Gaza in exchange for lifting the blockade on Gaza.
In a post on X, Francesa Albanese addressed Mike Huckabee and wrote:
“It is my duty to bring to Your Excellency’s attention Article 8(2)(b)(xxv) of the Rome Statute, which states that withholding humanitarian aid is a war crime.
“This action would further aggravate conditions of life calculated to destroy the Palestinian population of Gaza. No one benefits from this—not the Palestinians, not the Israelis, not the North Americans—none of us.
“Together, we can stop this monstrosity.”
US senator meets detained Palestinian student, calls for his release
Peter Welch, who represents the state of Vermont, has met with Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, who was arrested earlier this month, upon arriving for an interview for his citizenship interview.
Mahdawi is being held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St Albans as he fights the Trump administration’s effort to deport him.
Welch published a video of his meeting with Mahdawi and said: “He should be released so he can become a citizen.”
In the video, Mahdawi says: “He [Trump] is describing being antiwar as anti-Semitic. How could that be possible when most of my partners at Columbia’s campus and beyond are Jews and Israelis.”
He adds, “My hope and my dream is to see this conflict, if one might say, to see an end to the war and end to the killing to see a peaceful resolution between Palestinians and Israelis. How could this be a threat to anybody except the war machine that is feeding this?”
US government denies Mahmoud Khalil’s request to attend son’s birth
The Palestinian Columbia University student, who has been detained for more than a month, has missed the birth of his son after the Department of Homeland Security denied his request to be there in person, according to US media reports.
The baby was born in a hospital in New York City early on Monday morning.
His wife, Noor Abdalla, condemned the US government’s actions in a statement.
“I welcomed our son into the world earlier today without Mahmoud by my side,” she said. “Despite our request for ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to allow Mahmoud to attend the birth, they denied his temporary release to meet our son. This was a purposeful decision by ICE to make me, Mahmoud, and our son suffer.”
“ICE and the Trump administration have stolen these precious moments from our family in an attempt to silence Mahmoud’s support for Palestinian freedom.
“I will continue to fight every day for Mahmoud to come home to us,” Abdalla added. “I know when Mahmoud is freed, he will show our son how to be brave, thoughtful, and compassionate, just like his dad.”
Khalil was able to communicate with his wife for some portion of the delivery, The New York Times reported.
The 30-year-old, who is a permanent resident of the US and played a key role in pro-Palestine protests on campus, is being held in the state of Louisiana, about 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometres) away from his home in New York. He was arrested on March 8 and the Trump administration is seeking to deport him, accusing him of supporting Hamas and being a threat to US foreign policy.
