Forums - Gaming Discussion - Head of Capcom R&D slams Sony's Sixaxis Controller

Thought this was fairly interesting:

As the editor notes, it's harsh criticism for simply copying innovative competitors, but I can agree that there is a good deal of value in innovation over simple mimesis. Anyone else have thoughts on the subject? Here's a simple discussion:

1) Wii fanboy: Sixaxis copied the Wii mote! Sony just copies what Nintendo does!

2) Sony fanboy: So what? Why is that bad?

So, Microsoft and Nintendo put rumble in their controllers after Sony did. Does that mean that they are unoriginal? Pointing fingers is kind of pointless. Wii-motes do motion-sensing better, no one will argue with you on that. The Sixaxis didn't have to sacrifice buttons, however, to have its motion-sensing. I mean really, Smash Brothers Brawl cannot even be played correctly on a Wii-mote. However good you think the Wii-mote is, it is not perfect. No hostility was intended, I think it is just kind of childish to blame companies for copying ideas when ALL of them do it.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Well, Sony does get slammed for that often. Their "Mii-too" attitude. With PSHome, they are combining the Mii avatars with the Xbox Achievements. Granted, they are improving the graphics, but that really isnt innovation.

Thats due to ignorance. Coz.... The first controller I had with features similar to Sixaxis and Wiimote, is the Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle. Maybe there was another company that made it before Microsoft, but I am not making a statement to show my ignorance.

Your first statement is false: Nintendo invented the Rumble Pack back in the N64 era.

and

Sony copied Nintendo by including the Rumble feature on the PS controllers.

The first rumblepack on a controller I seen is on a N64, before PS2 has it.

They're right, Nintendo makes the innovations. There is a test for this sort of thing. If it's innovative, and from Sony it's copied off of something that another company did. Just keep looking. The only thing Sony can do is improve their graphics. Seriously though, has Sony ever innovated anything that wasn't a copy and was succesful?
