Daaaamn, what a rough quarter and fiscal year for Embracer Group. Their PC/console gaming division saw a loss of -505m SEK on the October-December Fiscal Q3 (compared to +35m SEK the same quarter the previous year), while the on the first 3 quarters of the fiscal year overall they saw a loss of -329m SEK (compared to +884m SEK on the first 3 quarters of the previous fiscal year. It looks like the belly flop of Saints Row reboot hurt them big time, as well as just general underperformance of the division and the depreciation of the Swedish Krona currency in the first 2 quarters of the fiscal year.

They are still in the black/positive overall thanks to their tabletop division kicking ass and taking names, but they really need to fix the problems in their PC/console division and soon. If Dead Island 2 flops as well, 2 high profile AAA flops in a row for them, it won't be good for sure.

Good thing Embracer hasn’t bought half the industry. Anyway, Hogwarts Legacy (72hrs) about to leapfrog Persona 5 Royal (78hrs) will easily make top 10 (Skyrim in 10th with 88hrs)

Ride The Chariot || Games Complete ‘24 Edition

13 Embracer games didn't release in the quarter, so it seems like there were some games cancelled thanks to the overall underperformance of the PC/console division. The number of active game development projects at Embracer has pretty much been continually increasing for years as Embracer acquired more and more studios on a regular basis, but this quarter the number went down for the first time in quite awhile.

Some other interesting tidbits from the financials:

  • 94 projects currently scheduled to be released in the April 2023-March 2024 fiscal year, including 58 which haven't been announced yet
  • 5 new Middle Earth games due to release in the April 2023-March 2024 fiscal year (Embracer acquired Middle Earth Enterprises last year)
  • 19 AAA games due for release by March 31, 2026 (down from 25 on the previous quarter, meaning that 6 AAA games were either delayed past March 2026 or cancelled during the quarter)
  • 31 AAA games due for release by March 31, 2028
  • Goat Simulator 3 and Evil West sold within Embracer's projections, unlike Saints Row
  • The top 10 back-catalog revenue drivers for Embracer in the quarter were Deep Rock Galactic, Hot Wheels: Unleashed, Welcome to Bloxburg, Insurgency: Sandstorm, Snowrunner, Star Trek Online, Neverwinter Online, Metro Exodus, Chivalry 2, and Borderlands 3. This means that Saints Row, which released the previous quarter, had already fallen out of Embracer's top 10 revenue drivers mere months after it released.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty, MLB The Show 23 and Valheim for March Game Pass so far.

Shaping up to be another strong month, February was fairly mid but January was great.

But where's my Starfield Direct. 🥲

Wolfenstein 3 still lives? As of January 2022.
