I feel like it's part of a multi-year contract since IGN seems to present this showcase every year lol

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I feel like this is an AI initiative, seeing that it's based on the recent trend of recomps and decomps, but seems like this small group is to explore on what's possible outside of traditional gaming.

Here's a couple of the bigger parts I noticed of the announcement.

"In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we’ve seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another."

"While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models. To explore these possibilities, I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience"

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

While AI is extremely divisive in game development, XBOX immediately hopping on the increasingly popular trend of decompilation to bring classic games to platforms they were never designed for is crazy to see. When it comes to emerging trends, XBOX has been way behind the times for years now.

It is just so cringe to watch.

If you pre ordered gears you get a gift card, I only knew because I had one aswell.

Looks like this

I'm kind of shocked they would even be considering console exclusivity for Minecraft moving forward, CoD of course is too big and they are still mandated to keep it multiplat until like 2033 because that was part of their acquisition deal, but Minecraft is even bigger than CoD, they averaged 40m copies a year the last 3 years, a  game selling 40m copies a year in it's 12th, 13th, and 14th years on the market is unheard of outside of Minecraft.

I would say everything smaller than CoD and Minecraft makes sense for console exclusivity. Elder Scrolls probably stands to lose the most copy sales over it of the series smaller than those two, but it would also move alot of Project Helix hardware. Asha clearly wants to revive Xbox as a platform, and that just isn't going to happen without significant exclusives.

I am assuming they mean things like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends. There isn't going to be a new installment of THE Minecraft (i.e Minecraft 2). It's just the spin-offs they may be considering, and I don't think it would hurt the Minecraft IP to have the small spin-offs console exclusive.

The wording is weird and it is only a hypothetical question but I doubt they would be legally allowed to remove an existing game that is already available for sale, the Minecraft, from PSN/eShop.
