Forums - Gaming - Basic features that should become standard on console hardware?

I just got the 8bitdo Ultimate controller for Switch and it's the best controller for the system bar non. Much better than Nintendo's own. Quality wise esp. Hall effect analog sticks.Analog triggers. Macros back buttons (also should be standard now) It's simply amazing. For those curious hall effect analog uses magnets rather than using moving parts. You don't get drift from this ever. In fact SEGA was doing this with Saturn and Dreamcast. Why those controllers still don't drift and to this very day work just as good now as when they were brand new.

Why SEGA was doing this in the mid 90s and only now 3rd party stuff is charging a premium for it 25+ years later? Maybe SEGA had some rights on them. Dunno but I feel it's time for Nintendo,Sony,MS to jump on board. Sony and Nintendo are esp bad here. They seem to have the most issues with drift. Shooters are so popular and back buttons really are a game changer. I'm not the biggest FPS guy tho I like my fair share. One game on Switch that really benefits for me is Daemon X Machina. I hate playing it on a Switch pro so I would play it handheld with the Hori Split Pad Pro thanks to back buttons. Now I can play it docked.

I really thought PS5 would make them standard but nope they want $200 for that feature when PS4 charged $30 for an add on. At least give us that Sony for PS5.

The big 3 can make those controllers not drift but having a faulty product and being able to sell again in modern gaming is easier to make more money. They are never gonna make those pads palatable like they used to I know alot of gamers replaced their PS4 and Joycons. I have a strong theory they are doing this on purpose.

Probably not doing it on purpose... I haven't had to replace or repair a controller due to drift, ever.
But I also don't use the joycons and such as I have a 3rd party Pro controller, so my usage is different (And probably lighter) to most.

It comes down to cost benefit, we need to remember the controllers bundled with a console are considered 'free' for the most part, every generation more is being packed into them, so they need to try and keep the bill of materials relatively the same.

And that means some concessions/corners have to be cut, which is likely why all three console manufacturers settled on the analogue sticks that we have currently.

*********

1) What I want is swappable D-Pad/Analogue sticks for all controllers to go from a symmetrical to asymmetrical stick layout. - I prefer the Xbox layout for FPS shooters, I prefer the Playstation layout for fighters that rely on the D-Pad. - Why can't I have the best of both worlds?

2) I would also like dual noise-cancelling microphones in all my controllers, negates the need for a mic on your head, also opens up the possibility for the awesome Kinect-like voice commands or console UI navigation.

3) Replaceable batteries. - It's not great when your playstation controller has to live the cabled life as it's Lithium Cell has died due to being cycled it's max 1,000 cycles... Requiring the disassembly of the entire controller and a replacement of the Cell, which a ton of people just don't feel comfortable doing, which is fair enough.

I firmly belief Microsoft made the right choice here and allowed for their Lithium cells to be user replaceable/upgradeable. - But also opening up the choice for high capacity NiMH Cells that seem to last a lifetime... Not difficult to find 2,700mAH cells which would equate to 5,400mAH in parallel... Makes the PS4 1,000mAH seem tiny. - Although voltage differences here need to be factored in. 1.2v/2.4v vs 3.7v.

Well, the Xbox One pads are definitely tougher since 2017 my Xbox One controller still has not had any drift. Maybe it's a Sony/Nintendo thing?

Being able to play all games offline, never having to hook the console up to the internet, and games that don't have to be installed first in order to play them. Those would be my three hard-and-fast-rules.

Is hall effect more expensive when SEGA who was cost-cutting like crazy on DC used them?

I would like the Elite Series 2 controller to become the standard Xbox controller, at least by next generation. Most of the cost must have been RnD. Also, replaceable parts for the controller or the system parts to be purchasable (Nintendo does this I think). I don't want to have to buy an entire controller or system if something fails.

My right bumper doesn't work very well on my ES2 (I have to click it in a very specific angle where the left one can be pressed anywhere to register, so it can click without working), also one of the thumbsticks rubber broke.

Gyro controls.

Consoles should always be region-free.

Mzuzek beat me to it, but gyro controls.
It already is standard in Nintendo and I believe Playstation systems in terms of being physically present, but on PS it's not well supported in software.
I'd be much more interested in PS5 and Xbox Series if they supported it extensively; aiming with an analog stick alone just feels so outdated to me now.
