Probably not doing it on purpose... I haven't had to replace or repair a controller due to drift, ever.
But I also don't use the joycons and such as I have a 3rd party Pro controller, so my usage is different (And probably lighter) to most.

It comes down to cost benefit, we need to remember the controllers bundled with a console are considered 'free' for the most part, every generation more is being packed into them, so they need to try and keep the bill of materials relatively the same.

And that means some concessions/corners have to be cut, which is likely why all three console manufacturers settled on the analogue sticks that we have currently.

*********

1) What I want is swappable D-Pad/Analogue sticks for all controllers to go from a symmetrical to asymmetrical stick layout. - I prefer the Xbox layout for FPS shooters, I prefer the Playstation layout for fighters that rely on the D-Pad. - Why can't I have the best of both worlds?

2) I would also like dual noise-cancelling microphones in all my controllers, negates the need for a mic on your head, also opens up the possibility for the awesome Kinect-like voice commands or console UI navigation.

3) Replaceable batteries. - It's not great when your playstation controller has to live the cabled life as it's Lithium Cell has died due to being cycled it's max 1,000 cycles... Requiring the disassembly of the entire controller and a replacement of the Cell, which a ton of people just don't feel comfortable doing, which is fair enough.

I firmly belief Microsoft made the right choice here and allowed for their Lithium cells to be user replaceable/upgradeable. - But also opening up the choice for high capacity NiMH Cells that seem to last a lifetime... Not difficult to find 2,700mAH cells which would equate to 5,400mAH in parallel... Makes the PS4 1,000mAH seem tiny. - Although voltage differences here need to be factored in. 1.2v/2.4v vs 3.7v.

Well, the Xbox One pads are definitely tougher since 2017 my Xbox One controller still has not had any drift. Maybe it's a Sony/Nintendo thing?
