Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sonic sells 1.5 billion from VGchartz front page.

Sonic is that type of IP power compared to any other Sega franchise very much speaks for itself, Thanks TrunksWD

The figure isn't just copies sold of Sonic games, but also includes downloads of free-to-play games.

Yes, we all know that too like fortnite is free but makes alot of money ^^ I know some of my mom friends kids bought few things on Sonic runners etc store.

That seems like an insanely large figure. Pretty undeserved as well, Mario has only sold what 500-600m and is IMO a far better franchise. I guess a shit tonne of those were just F2P mobile games or something.

I think Sega knows how to market Sonic on Mobile better than Mario? I mean Gotta push marketing too. And Sega has been in the game of 3rd party long enough to push series to more people? I um gotta sleep.

Over 1.3 billion of it is F2P mobile downloads.

I did some digging a while back and 2011 was the last time Sega seems to have reported genuine sales for the franchise as a whole. It was at 70 million then. After that they started adding F29 mobile downloads to the total, which rapidly inflated the figure.

Interestingly they did report actual yearly software sales in 2021 and 2022. They shifted 4.4 million in FY 2021 and 5.8 million in FY 2022. If we run with those figures and assume a generous range of 5-10 million each year since 2011 then the series is likely around 120-170 million in sales.

Mario should be at around 800mil sold.

Sonic has a lot of F2P mobile games for a long time already. Sold copies should be below 200mil is my guess.

That's what I was thinking. Whether core Mario games, Mario Kart, or other titles, Mario is way more loved and seems way more popular.

If F2P games were excluded, Sonic would probably be at about 300-350 million.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 57 million (was 60 million, then 67 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

It's not even close to that. 300mil would put in the top 7 best selling franchises.

One thing to give Sonic some credit for, it has remained popular among kids and these kids have ipads and even phones to play these free2play games on.
