How is the game giving you migraines?  I'm genuinely curious, you know I'm not one of those fanboys defending a game lol

So wait, if I'm to understand this, it's the difference in brightness levels that gives you headaches since HDR (naturally, by name alone) gives a far greater range of brightnesses and color vibrancies?  Interesting, I never really thought about that... I always thought the closer we get to real life, the better... Then AGAIN, real life doesn't have laser beams and fuck-all explosions happening everywhere from monsters with blue flashlights for eyes... lmfao

I'm trying to figure it out as well. I played in 4K HDR this afternoon and 'survived' lol. I was feeling a headache coming on after 2 hours but the high ambient light helped. (Snow plus sun, no curtains, had to dial up the brightness to be able to see anything in game at night time) So I went jogging outside on the trail, did wonders! (It actually looked quite close to how Horizon FW portrays the snow parts, yet without the headache or robots chasing me)

The game can be very intense in light flashes, scratch that, is very intense 90% of the time. The camera doesn't help as it will swing around wildly in combat. Next to that, the contrast between night and day is very high and the day/night cycle not all that long. You get treated to an overpowering laser light show at night time against very dark backgrounds. So I was playing in the evening with very little ambient light to be able to se where I was going.

During day time it's very very bright everywhere. Outside that is, pretty dim inside. In real life you don't run inside outside all the time, but in the game you tend to go into dark interiors, buildings, ruins, caves, under water, and back into bright bright daylight all the time. So I'm playing with low ambient light to be able to see everything indoors, but then you have this glaring rectangle in front of you outside. Also different with real life where your whole vision lights up instead of staring into a bright rectangle with dark around.

Then you have the shimmering that's always present on foliage, lack of anti aliasing, sharpening filter, it's a very busy picture visually. Looks gorgeous, but it's a lot to take in and not all that stable in motion. Sudden color changes when going inside, and of course also plenty brightness changes opening the map. Searing desert, regular brightness menu.

Lastly, the fonts are small, so I move my chair to sit closer to the tv. I had no issues with Rift Apart, however I played that from further away, with more ambient light (not so dark at night), and Rift Apart has a very stable clean picture. Still a lot of detail to take in, but not the extreme contrast and camera swings as Horizon.

I guess it's just too much for me to handle lol.

When I play on my projector I also do so with almost no ambient light. However the screen is 92" and max 50 nits. No 1,200 nits HDR peaks or 200+ nits avg day time brightness. Here you can see how bright Horizon FW gets (or tries to get, displays don't go that high)

(At 1:02 in the video, time stamp doesn't seem to work)

I sit further away with the projector, fonts are easy to read, shimmering is much less due to down sampling, but I think it's mostly the lower contrast swings that prevent headaches. I physically feel a pain flash in my eyes when I walk from inside to outside in Horizon in HDR. In RL you get something similar when you come out of the cinema into a bright sunny day. Yet that's once, in the game it happens over and over.

So maybe, it's not such a good idea to pump games up to realistic brightness, at least not as long as you keep doing totally unrealistic things in game! I have no issues while racing in GT Sport in HDR, yet you don't constantly go into pitch black tunnels and back into searing daylight.

Yea, I think in less words, the extreme and rapid changes in brightness are probably causing your pupils to constantly contract/dilate at a pace that's straining your eyes and the resultant fatigue eventually translates into a headache.  This actually makes sense when I stop and think about it, though I never really had to (I also play in 4K HDR).  I guess the easiest test is to play with sunglasses on, and if there's no headache, there's your surefire answer lol

Having said that, I also want to mention I played HFW in quality mode, so there's no shimmer caused by the rendering method.  In addition, the tendency at 30fps is to be less "hyper" with the camera, so you might reduce your eye strain if you play in quality mode because it'll force you to be less twitchy with your aim and/or turn down the camera sensitivity.

People's eyes are all different, it's possible he simply has more innate sensitivity to rapid brightness/vibrancy changes.  This is why there's always the general health suggestion to play in well-lit rooms so that the difference between the TV and the surrounding area don't cause your pupils to dilate too much which makes the TV TOO bright and can result in strain (which is not far off from what's happening to him).

Dayuummmmm... *cries in envy*

You got the full setup, man!  You put the money in more than me, that's for sure lol... That's partly also because I prefer playing on a TV rather than monitors right on front of my face, so my setup is just a cheapo steering wheel stand with enough adjustment to be placed in front of the couch and extend the steering wheel over my lap with pedals down by my feet

A new dilemma, my favorite race combo is on next week in GT Sport, GR.3 on N24 (Nurburgring Nordschleife 24h layout) which runs until next Sunday night. So I might be starting GT7 a couple days later lol. I've only done 4,752 laps around the ring in sport mode so far, sadly won't be possible to reach 5,000 (248 laps = 124 races = 17.7 races per day = 9 hours per day) but I can give it a try!

Grass makes you spin, stick to the road ;)

It's chaos on the track. It seems most people think their ratings have safely been copied to GT7, or simply don't care anymore lol. Good for me, just got to avoid the other cars taking each other out lol. GT7 needs a penalty system, it's messy out there.

I wonder if next week will still have daily races in GT Sport. A lot of people are speculating this is the last week, but I doubt it. Why cut it off, PD has just been repeating the same race combos anyway. Not like it takes any effort to pick 3 previously used races.

Nice, you should try to beat Elden Ring with this thing.

Built this thing about over a year ago for PC and PS4/5 racing.  I run this through VR, the triple 27s, and/or the 50" Bravia... Personal preference is the Bravia though.. don't get much side view, but the bigger screen is easier to judge corners as I set my FOV to match closely to a real driving FOV.  VR is nice too, but even after all these years I still get motion sickness after a while.  But yea, it costed quite a bit when I started putting it together, but as far as my wife knows.. I only spent a couple hundred.. ?

Just wanted to say, I dropped into your channel and you're vlogs are entertaining.  Consider me subscribed.. keep up the good work.

It's like you don't do rally racing lol

LMFAO, I had a chuckle, I'd definitely go viral with 1mil+ views on a video of me fighting/beating Starscourge Radahn with a steering wheel... But alas, I'm playing Elden Ring on XSX hehe

VR is rough, and it's for a simple reason: your brain expects physical motion to match the visual motion.  When it does not, your brain is being "tricked".  This is the same idea of wearing glasses that invert your view upside down until several days later when your brain automatically reinverts the image so that it looks normal.  The brain develops into a set "understanding" of the world because it's spent most of its life operating that way, so VR when it comes to REAL LIFE type motion (ergo, racing, flying, FPS, etc.) will always induce some sort of abnormal response.  People always tell me how they don't get sick playing VR, and then when I'm like "what are you playing?", they're like "Beat Saber, Job Simulator" and I just start chuckling because none of it really mimics real life motion.

Also, glad you checked my dumb ass out!  I'm a tough pill to swallow, but that always helps filter out the judgmental people, so I kind of leave it that way so that I know the people that DO sub and watch my stuff are good people

But I'm still envious you'll be enjoying GT7 better than me hahaha!

I don't need to wear special glasses to get motion sickness. When I get new glasses everything moves weird again for a couple days due to barrel distortion in my eyes (sort of have fish eye lenses for eyes). When my prescription is updated I have to get used everything 'moving' different again than expected. Plus it takes a while to stop seeing curves where there are none, sort of straighten out the world again.

But you get used to it. I spend as much time with as without my glasses, no issues switching between. I'm near sighted so can't see up close with glasses on, anything beyond a lap top screen I need my glasses. And sadly in VR as well since the focal point is in the distance.

Btw, Elden Ring with Ring Fit controller
