Week 4 Breakdown - Our First Breakdown of the New Year!

Now that I finally have the tables and comparisons set up. (A whopping 24 tables! 6 comparisons x 4 regions!)

It's time to finally take a deep dive and look at how the comparisons look to start out the the year now that the first month is in the books!

PlayStation 5:

Overall, after one month, the Xbox Series is ahead in both of its' comparisons, the PS5 is behind in its' comparisons, while the Switch is 1-1 so far (Ahead of the 2010 DS, behind last year.)

Sales typically pick up in February due to everyone filing their taxes and getting those returns to spend some money! So we'll see how that fairs for the three consoles in the coming month.

Week 5 Breakdown

Semiconductor shortages are so severe that the PS5 is now down YoY from last year, countering the usual rise you'd expect from a console entering its 2nd full year on the market.
Combined with the Xbox Series seeing big growth so far and this is the closet that Sony and Microsoft have been on a weekly basis ever since the end of the 7th generation.

As for the Nintendo Switch, while it is overall down YoY thus far, it is actually UP YoY in Europe. However, this does make sense when you think about where the Switch has room to grow. Looking at the Overall Platform totals and if you look at where the #1 console is in each region compared to the Switch, it is:

NA: >19 million (DS 57.39 > NS 38.26)
JP: NS 23.70)
ROTW: >11 million (PS2: 25.57 > NS 14.40)

EU: 27.53)

So there's more room for growth in Europe than in Japan and the Rest of the World put together.

I'm interesting in seeing the PS5 vs last year.
A console should be on the rise in it's second year, but shortages are making that tough. It will be interesting to see if they can supply enough to satisfy demand and eke out the win later in the year. Xbox being up makes perfect sense to me between the acquisitions/Gamepass and the simple fact that they can supply stores with at least the Series S. People, especially in NA where brand loyalty is weak, will get tired of waiting for PS5 to be available and turn to Xbox to get into the new generation.
