Forums - Gaming - Control: Should I keep playing it?

I've had control on my to-play list for quite a while now.  When I realized recently that it's about to leave Gamepass, I decided now is the time.

I started playing a few days ago. At this point I have maybe 4 hours in the game, and I feel like it's just the exact same thing over and over again.  Everything looks the same, combat seems pretty plain, and I'm just not really understanding what all the hype was about. It doesn't feel like a bad game to me, but nothing special.

Anyway, I only have like a week left until it leaves Gamepass, so I'm going to have to really buckle down and play it if I'm going to get through it. But, should I?

Probably not if you already don't like it. It's repetitive the whole way through. The story is a mess. But yes, it's not that long so it's not a big time investment. At least flying around throwing shit at people is satisfying.

I would quit. It planted a lot of seeds that I thought would grow into something interesting, but it never quite came together. The gameplay gets moderately more interesting as you get more powers, but never gets that good, and the story never reaches a satisfying climax. Worst, the game just kind of... ends. Really felt like the ending was just a way to get me to invest in DLC.

On the bright side, if you play all the way through you'll get to hear Porcupine Tree who are awesome. Or you could just play that on youtube.

I really loved it, but my first try wasn't successful, so I can't tell.

How many powers did you unlock ?

I thought Control had a ton of interesting thoughts and ideas, but it executed them in the most straightforward way possible. You need a David Lynch or Hideo Kojima type personality to really make that concept thrive. Overall, I personally enjoyed the gameplay enough to beat it, but it was definitely repetitive and the story was a letdown.

Honestly, that was the best part of the game. I was so hyped when it started playing.

I was legitimately confused and thought I had somehow started playing it on my Alexa or something, cause I totally didn't expect it. Although, I dunno how Steven Wilson would feel about that song in particular being used in a videogame, but still cool.

By the way, dunno how into them you are, but if you didn't know they're back! New single released, new album coming, touring EU, and US next year. As someone who got into them later on and have never seent hem live (although I've seen Wilson play some of their songs) I'm fucking psyched.

Edit: Actually he thanked them for using it, so guess he was cool with it. Either because the song was not meant to be taken super literally, or because $$$.

Everybody’s different, but it’s one of my favorite games from the last 5 years. I really liked the combat, but my favorite thing was the story. If you really look for all of the extras that fill in story pieces and add to the game’s personality, I feel like it’s hard not to like the game.

I have a general rule for games.. that if don't like the first hour (heck even 30-40mins), its not really worth continuing playing anymore. Control doesn't suddenly change after 4 hours of gameplay so I would just skip and move on.

If you do continue.. It does get better the further in but not drastically. Gameplay is pretty fun once you unlock more late abilities, and some of the best/most fun ones ones come nearing the end of the game. Story wise.. Control for me, has the weakest story Remedy has made. As in its kinda bland and generic, almost like something that you'd find from a SyFy show. Though if you like Remedy games you might appreciate the tie ins and Easter eggs in there. It might be worth sticking with if you liked Alan Wake as its set in the same universe and could enhance the experience when playing its upcoming sequel.

I've already pre-ordered the Deluxe Vinyl set, so yeah, I'm pretty hyped!

Well I probably played it for like 3-4 hours the dropped it.
It bored to tears and instead I started playing FF VII Remake and Xenbolade Chronicles 2, cero regrets.
In my opinion just dropped it I'm sure you have something more fun to play.
