Forums - Sales Discussion - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch

Two weeks have passed since my last post in this thread. Since then we've been blessed with a Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct (game looks promising), plus today's announcement of value-added Switch bundles for North America and Europe.

North America will get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for free with a standard Switch, Europe will get Nintendo Switch Sports with a standard Switch. Both continents will get Switch Lites in two colors with a free copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. All of these SKUs will be made available in October. Additionally, there's the global special edition of a red Mario-themed OLED model.

So Nintendo isn't sitting there doing nothing and watching Switch fade away. All the above things make it feasible to ship ~7m units of hardware during the holiday quarter and with the exception of the Mario OLED SKU, there doesn't seem to be a limit on the availability. This makes it possible to carry over the good momentum into 2024. Although one has to wonder why Nintendo doesn't offer MK8D and NSS as bundles in both North America and Europe. Oh well, they can still start to do that next year.

For like 5 years we have gotten the MK8D value added bundle for BF but if that’s now the standard bundle than I wonder if we will see it for a reduced price this BF or will they just say fuck it and not do a special BF deal?

So finally after 6.5 years the Switch gets its first permanent discount/deal "price cut".

Tbh I was never expecting the Switch to get a true price cut anytime soon, if ever. Inflation rates and manufacturing costs are much higher than they typically are for a console in its 7th year and you can't ask for much more demand than the Switch is getting right now for a price cut to make sense.

However, the next best thing is value added bundles, pricing the system at the same price with now software included. This deal could be bigger than we think, even the small MK8 Black Friday discount bundle the Switch had would sell like crazy and now they are selling that bundle permanently, should provide an extra boost in sales this holiday and even beyond.

First time Nintendo is doing value added bundles for the Switch (at least outside black friday deals). Could be first step toward an actual price cut next year, but I suppose they would only do that if sales really started to slump hard. They naturally expect Switch to be losing momentum at this point. We're seeing this bundle deal in the markets where sales are slumping a bit too much for Nintendo's liking / forecasts. We'll only see an actual price cut if hardware sales next year drop even faster than what they expect (they could easily do a $50 price cut next year and still be making bank on every system sold).

Good to see them actually making an effort to increase sales now.

The bundle is at the same price as always. Why would they release the bundle for $300 in October and then suddenly lower it's price in November?

They had that Switch Sports bundle in Japan earlier this year.

It’s not unheard of, for example, Nintendo released a Zelda themed 3DS XL with a digital copy of A Link Between Worlds for $219.99, literally one week later Nintendo tweeted out that it was on sale for $149.99 during Black Friday weekend.

Shame there's no Mario Kart 8 bundle for Europe, but NA only. Nintendo really thought Switch Sports is better suited for Europeans lol

Are these bundles permanent or are they just for a limited time?

Limited time

They didn't say anything about it being for a limited time. I mean it could just be an very extended holiday deal, but it also might just be permanent bundles considering they are doing them in the two major regions where sales are more sluggish than they would like.
