Forums - Sales - PS5 Ships 17.3 Million Units as of December 2021, PS4 Ships 116.8 Million

These shortages hurt Playstation more than they do the other 2 consoles. Why? Because Microsoft will be able to manufacture about as many systems as Sony. In English speaking territories, like the US, Microsoft can make sure there are plenty of systems available, which means earlier adopters will just end up buying XBS, later adopters will want the same system as their friends, and that will end up being the new dominant system in English speaking regions. All of this is even before factoring in all of Microsoft's recent acquisitions. Meanwhile, the non-English speaking regions will insist on PS5's, and since demand is higher there, a disproportionate number of PS5s will be sent there.

Basically, these shortages are handing all of the English speaking regions over to Microsoft fairly early on in this generation. The fact that they are going to have more games due to their acquisitions is just going to help them even more in these same regions, especially when you consider that these are the same places that tend to like Call of Duty.

Just as a heads up. The front page graph pull data from the Platforms Totals page (https://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/). However the page was coded to pull data from VGC Pro it messes up and does not like updating after adjustments are made. So the PS5 totals on the main site will annoyingly be off for a bit.

Why does the front page show the Wii Uvat 13.97mil. Did they even manufacture that many? 13.56mil is the final shipment number.

They could have 8 of them flop, if 2 are successful Sony will consider that a success

I hadn't even noticed that. The issue again is with the Platform Total page. It needs a complete overhaul to fix the data on it. However, we have no one to do so. At one point we attempted a fix. It worked on the new consoles, but messed up the totals on the older consoles before VGC existed.

The numbers are correct on VGC Pro, but however the Platform Total page is coded, it doesn't like it when adjustments are made.

That sucks. I wished I could help, but I don't understand anything about coding.

Me neither. So I better not dare attempt a fix then break the whole site. I have access to the VGC numbers directly to make adjustments when needed. But that is it.

Anyway to just put in negative numbers for one of the weeks to bring everything back into balance?  And just make a thread and pin it, explaining the adjustments, how they were done, and why?

Any idea what language it's based on? SQL?

I started as a software developer 4 months ago and mostly work with SSMS using SQL Server, so I'm learning more and more about database administration.

Impossible to put in negative numbers. Plus that wouldn't fix the issue. The numbers are now correct on VGC Pro. It is however the Platform Totals page pulls data from VGC Pro that has problems.

Temporary fix?  Keep the chart from displaying anything and overlay a graphic on top of it that isn't tied to any formulas and just manually inserted each week, or if can't be done, display an image with a graph on one of the thumbnails normally used for an article and all discussions in here can moved there?

2 years are going to be down the drain though, and PS4 sales only got better as time went on. Stock issues don't look to be resolved anytime soon, so it is not like Sony can produce 30m PS5s to make up for the lost sales in a future year.

In the earnings call, CFO Hiroko Totoki is sticking with the 22.6M projection for FY22, which lines up with Sony expecting the PS5 to catch up to the PS4 over time. Granted, I'm basing this on second hand information, but PS5 demand is great enough where it can have some massive, non holiday quarters. Also, it's possible Sony is lowballing their own projections, I wouldn't be surprised to see it beat PS4's 2.2 Million in Q4 of FY14.

Edit: I'm mistaken, no projections given for FY22, but Sony expects the PS5 to catch up over time.
