So, what's the alternative to unions? It seems unions are pretty much despised in the USA, or maybe just on this site?

All these jobs, where people turn their passions or hobbies into a job, tend to be very exploitative. I am surprised that outsourcing to China, India etc. hasn't been a bigger issue when it comes to game development. Importing cheap workers via H-1B visas is likely not an option for the developers because these jobs aren't paid well enough anyway (with some rare exceptions for key developers). I don't know if unions can do much against outsourcing, this has to be addressed on a legal level. Also contract work has to be considered equivalent to standard employment in particular if the contractor works for one single company.

Wonder what this means for MS and how this will affect the buy out.

If as a Union they chose to remove Kotick and MS refuse what would that mean? Wonder what knock on affect it will have as one successful union could lead more people to form them in other companies across the Industry.

This is a tiny group. It's not going to have any impact on the acquisition. They certainly aren't able to toss out the CEO of the company.
