Forums - Gaming - Failed Gaming Concepts/Ideas That You Wish Were Successful

Tagged games:

So what are some failed gaming ideas or concepts that you wish had been successful. Had these ideas, products, or trends taken hold gaming could have gone down a different path. It can be a specific series of games that sold poorly and no longer continues. It could be a genre that no longer sees major releases. It could be a service, a business model, or even a peripheral. Anything that you wished would have been more successful so you could see how things evolved.

Here are some of mine.

1) PlayStation Home- Cool concept with ho-hum execution and reception, though it had some dedicated fans. I just feel like something like Home would work better as online capabilities and connection speeds got faster. I feel like something like Home would be interested to watch if it was successful alongside the age of streaming and whatnot.

2) Qore- This was a digital magazine that Sony produced and sold through the PS Store in the middle of the PS3's lifespan. It had behind the scene looks at upcoming games, demos, and playable minigames. I watched a fair share of episodes. I think it would be a cool concept to revive and give out as a bonus to PS Plus subscribers.

3) Eye of Judgement - This was an early PS3 game that used the PS Eye camera to bring monster playing cards to life. The Eye of Judgement was an original game but I think the concept would have cool if used by established card games like MAGIC the Gathering or Yugi-Oh. That never happened as far as I can tell.

4) Vita TV/PS TV - This product was tied to the Vita, so of course it was a failure. Now though I think it would be sweet to have a pocket size device that you could use to stream PS Now games. There are a lot of issues to work out and I know other devices and services have similar concepts, but I think this project died prematurely.

5) Pokemon Trading Card Game Series (CBS) - Another point dealing with card based games. Anyways the Pokemon TCG was an awesome game back in the GB days. In fact it is probably my favorite and most played Pokemon spinoff game. Alas, the series never continued except for a Japan only sequel. It is a shame though as Pokemon Cards as poopular as ever.

6) Nintendo Virtual Console - I am not including this because I think it was a failure. I think it is awesome and thus a shame that Nintendo did not continue the business model. It would have been great to have a forward compatible service for retro games. It worked across Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. But now Nintendo has abandoned that model in favor of giving classic games away as part of their online membership service. Bring back the Virtual Console to Swith.

The fact that motion controls aren't widespread in all platforms is a shame. At least the Switch and VR systems are keeping it afloat, but considering how much the technology has advanced (and how affordable it is, unlike VR) makes me wish we'd have more motion control games, and not just motion aiming. So few big games based on motion controls...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Virtual Boy....
I own the console and it's cool. But the lack of colours.... And the seizures.... Man they take the gloss off....

The tactical super hero game, i.e. Freedom Force. Basically I just want them to make more sequels to Freedom Force.

Chrono Break...it never made it past the concept stage so it counts!

Yeah, I'm totally with you. It's been a while since we would have experiences like Zack & Wiki, No More Heroes (gosh, how I loved this!), MadWorld, Excitebots, Red Steel 2 and even Mario Galaxy coming at a steady pace. I really wish that would have become like, if not the norm, at least 50% of the released games, but people seem to be way more conservative than I would have guessed at that time.

yeah, this.

Gyro controls in gamepads

We had it in Dualshock 3 and 4 and though its present in the DualSense its not used. Game developers largely ignore the feature so its mostly dead.

Though a bit gimmicky, I used to enjoy it for small stuff like if used for balancing in certain games. And maybe QTE's like in narrative driven games like Heavy Rain. Small things that add to immersion.

There were some really interesting projects on PC where people experimented with gyro controls with Flick Stick. And works really well even for games like CS Go.

Pressure sensitive (analogue) buttons

Remember in Metal Gear 2 where if you pressed a button and Snake would aim and harder would trigger a shot. Or in GT games where they can be used for acceleration when more pressure is applied. Yeah, I do. From light taps to harder presses it can add an additional input/s on one button. And something that adds additional function to a game input is a good thing imo. Sadly it went away with Sony's controllers after the PS2.

Its a shame because with all the complex games we have these days with so much things packed in them, it makes a lot of sense to have them. Like on PC's there are a few optical keyboards that works similarly on PC, and in conjunction with software you can map anything to them.
