Forums - Nintendo - Digital Foundry: Dying Light on Nintendo Switch Tech Review - Another Miracle Mobile Port?

A patch was released today and it includes a 30fps cap and improvements to handheld resolution. I think this may be my favorite Switch port.

Great to hear!

Since it seemed to spend like 95% of the time slightly over 30fps, a cap should result in a commendably stable experience. Really is something to see a game like this brought to a 2017 mobile system in such good shape.

Meanwhile Square-Enix is releasing KH1 and KH2 remasters on the cloud

OT: Not my kind of game but kudos to the developers for the effort they've put into this.

FPS test of the new patch in action, holds up really well

Darn impressive its running on a Switch.. at the same time it looks horrible. Sub 720P/30fps in 2021 shouldn't really be a thing :PP

I mean, what's the alternative? Just not port games like Dying Light to a system that's sold 92 million and is still going strong?

I can understand that those who prefer a higher graphical standard may find it unacceptable, but they're not really the target audience, since those people wouldn't be playing on Switch in the first place.

I was just poking in jest.. hence the double tongue. But yeah these are worse results than a generation old hardware which in itself was pretty horrible in terms of image quality and this is downgraded even more. Generally party and third party Nintendo games looks okay due to art style and the way game are designed for the console. Though ports like this doesn't really do the system any favors and kinda highlight its limitations. Granted yeah, its portable/hybrid console.

And of course its nice for people who haven't played it before and have a Switch. But really the games been out for 6 years. You would have thought the majority of people who'd wanted to play the game would have picked it up by now. Honestly I can't see why anyone would pick up an inferior port (at full price) of a game that could be picked up for so cheap on last gen consoles/PC - which will get a next gen patch in the upcoming months. Though yeah, if Switch if your only console/games machine then yeah sure, why not.

Well, in addition to Switch only owners, there's also those for whom the opportunity to play it portably is worth the technical downgrade. Witcher 3 was several years old when it came to Switch, and not exactly a looker, but apparently plenty of people still picked it up. As long as there's money to be made for the developer/publisher, and gamers willing to buy it, it's basically a matter of "why not?"

2015 game running on 2017 hardware and we are calling it a miracle port...

Looks horrible, great for people who only have a Switch I guess.

2015 AAA home console game running on a 2017 mobile device. Context is key.
