Lol not sure how to delete that. But Nintendo has a partnership with Nvidia. Switch is already Geforce ready. Nvidia charges $4.99 per month for Geforce Now and Nvidia makes money on every Switch sale since it runs on their SoC. Its a complete win for both companies to have Geforce Now. Ill be shocked if the Switch or Switch pro doesnt have it at some point.

Where's the money for Nintendo in that though?
Any device can handle WiFi streaming, the Switch already does have Cloud games, Resident Evil 7 is available in Japan via Cloud streaming for Switch for example.

In the 90's, gaming market was just much smaller than nowadays If you want to argue handheld market is now as big as it was 30 years ago, then ok, I agree. But with people getting more rich, gaming becoming more accessible, population growth, other markets starting being explored yada yada I thought the natural path was to handheld market grown as well I don't understand why you are ignoring the fact that even with Switch selling humungous amounts of hardware handheld sales are nowhere near its peak and those gamers went to smartphone gaming and will just never come back again Unless you don't count those costumers as handheld gamers, as they only bought DS and PSP and never bothered buying a dedicated hardware again |
Sorry for the late reply, I was pretty busy the last few days.
Well, maybe you expected the handheld market to grow rapidly and I see where you are coming from with that believe. However, the main reason for this is because companies didn't put as much resources into the handheld market. When companies put more resources into a market, that market grows. For example, Sony put lots of resources into the PSP, which made the market grow. Nintendo also put a lot of resources into the DS: The DS specifically was designed to grow the market via blue ocean strategy and Nintendo really felt the pressure from the PSP at first. So it's only logical to assume that the market would grow in such a situation. One generation later, Sony really didn't care that much about the Vita. They decided to focus on PS4 (as their resources are limited and the PS3 hadn't sold as well as they had hoped).
Remember, the home console market also shrunk after the Wii / PS3 generation:
Wii + PS3 + X360 = 275m units
PS3 + Xbone + Wii U = maybe 190m units in the end
The reason for the home console market shrinking between 2012 and 2017 ist the same as for the handhelds: Microsoft and Nintendo put out less appealing products than a generation before. Once Nintendo put out a more appealing product (Switch) their sales increased again. Same will happen for Microsoft if they do a good job with the Series X/S.
This is why I don't agree with the notion that "...those gamers went to smartphone gaming and will just never come back again". This idea is based on extremely small sample sizes and Nintendo has made a huge comeback with the Switch this generation. The two myths regarding Nintendo prior to the Switch release were:
1) The casuals have moved on and play on mobile
2) The dedicated handheld market is (almost) dead because of mobile
But if those things are true, why is the Switch selling? If people don't care about handhelds anymore and the casual players have moved on, why is the Switch (which is 50% portable) selling like crazy? Why are Animal Crossing and Mario Kart (mass-market focused games which also appeal to women and non-gamers) the best-selling titles on Switch? Why is Ring Fit adventure sold out and a blockbuster hit? The reason is clear: Whenever Nintendo puts out appealing products (Wii, DS, Switch) customers buy those products. Whenever Nintendo puts out less appealing products (Wii U, 3DS) customers do not buy them. It's that easy. Apparently, some customers came back, we can agree on this one, right? As the Switch is going to outsell the 3DS + Wii U combo by a landslide.
No, as cloud gaming still has a LONG way to go before it can be as efficient and versatile as being able to play a game natively, at anytime, and without an internet connection. Full 4GLTE is still not enough for effective multiplayer, let alone game streaming. So while it will be nice in ideal situations, it is actually still limited in practice. 5G is its best hope, but even then you will need ideal signal strength and 5G is not even close to being mainstream yet.
