This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4.

Switch Vs. PS4 US:

Gap change in latest month: 296,411 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,462,503 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,549,878 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 21,428,833

PS4 Total Sales: 18,878,955

August 2020 is the 42nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap in the US between the Switch and PlayStation 4 grew in favor of the Switch when you align launches. The Switch sold 296,411 more units than the PS4 in the last month. In the last 12 months, the Switch has grown its lead by 3.46 million units. The Switch currently leads by 2.55 million units.

The PS4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Switch launched on March 3, 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 42nd month on sale for the Switch is August 2020, while for the PS4 it is April 2017. The Switch has sold 21.43 million units, while the PS4 sold 18.88 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 did not reach the current Switch sales until month 49 where it sold a total of 21.96 million units.

Around the Network

Switch needs roughly 1.6 million within the next 8(!) month to keep the lead after PS4 holiday 2017.

Seems like in 4 month the gap will be huge. For sure at least 5-6 million, but probably even 6-8 million. When assuming "only" 500k september, 500k october, 1 million november and 2 million december (= 4 million for the rest of the year), then the gap would be 25.4 million vs 19.9 million. Thats a gap of 5.5 million. And I am pretty sure these numbers are on a rather low level. It also could be 6 million for the rest of the year, which made the gap grow to 7.5 million.
This will be very interesting.

It's pretty much a done deal that Switch will beat PS4 in the US at this point, barring a monumental blunder from Nintendo.

Where Japan is Nintendoland and Europe is Sonyland, America is the most contested of the major regions, with Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony all winning it at various stages. With neither PS4 nor Xbone really securing a strong dominance there, it could be Nintendo's for the taking.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

If the drop in 2021 (and the years after) are not really really really massively bad it is actually pretty sure that Switch will Surpass 3DS lifetime in Japan.

Around the Network

Switch should pass 3DS in Japan by the end of this year. All of the 3DS momentum was during the first couple of years while Switch is currently on fire.

Yeah 3DS is running out of puff while Switch is getting its second wind.
In the last year Switch has gained by twice as much as it now needs to overtake.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

This will be a close one; DS had its legs cut short by 3DS's early emergency price cut, so the result here will come down to how PS4 performs post-PS5.
