The DX version didn't sell that well for a pokemon title so Nintendo is trying to get some extra mileage from it.

Maybe but Arms, Mario Tennis, Splatoon 2 and Fire Emblem Warriors (only in Japan) already received a trial.

It's a really fun game. Didn't feel the need to double dip, but have been wanting to try the new characters.

Pretty awesome but... I don't like beating up Pokemon. Pokemon are generally just too adorable for beating up...

It's a fighting spin off.. Pokemon spin off never sold that much tbh. And the DX version outsold the Wii U version that sold pretty well for what it was.

Extra value for the subscription or a weekly trial/rental for $4 with a month of online play and NES/SNES games?

I like how Nintendo is building up that subscription.
