PS3 sold 4.3m units post PS4 launch which is a much worse performance than the 40.1m PS2 sold post PS3 launch.

I stand corrected then, I had the impression it sold something in the line of 10m.
Still I dont see Sony doing anything different than they have in previous gens.

Yes the strategy should be the same. As for the result of it, I'm expecting something closer to PS1's performance than PS2's.

Most would agree that PS2 performance was an anomaly resulting from PS3 being to expensive plus at the time PS2 was launched in several countries way late on the gen.

joke aside, expect lots of 3rd party support still using the userbase to fund nextgen

Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I feel like Sony loved the transition from PS3 to PS4 so they'll try to emulate that. Keep people focused on the new hardware, and also free up manufacturing space. Also the fact that they've upped their PS5 shipping prediction to 10 million suggests they're going all in on PS5.

Would say that deeply depends on the Software revenue. If SW sales on PS5 picks up very fast while on PS4 dies fast (same for subs) them sure they will like a fast transition and won't bother with deep price cuts to keep PS4 alive, now if that doesn't happen....

I agree. I also think their strategy might differ based on region. Seems like PS4 could sell forever in Eurppe, and it's still strong in the U.S. especially since the pandemic. I don't see Sony putting much effort to keep PS4 alive in Japan, I think they want to move on stat lol. Hopefully we'll see a super slim, hopefully with a disc drive because the pre-owned market is palpable.

Also the money on the rest of world may not be that high, and for an american 50USD difference may not be that considerable but considering exchange ratios and wages in other countries that cut may be significative in places like Brazil.

So let's say Sony manage to do PS4Slim for 149 USD versus 499 USD PS5.

For a place like brazil would mean PS4Slim for R$800-1000 (or 80%-100% minimum wage) versus PS5 for R$5000 (or 5 minimum wages) that is quite expressive.
