Switch vs 3DS in Japan Sales Comparison – Switch Closes the Gap in June 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS.

Switch Vs. 3DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 242,009 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,431,466 - Switch

Total Lead: 1,720,997 - 3DS

Switch Total Sales: 13,950,185

3DS Total Sales: 15,671,182

June 2020 is the 40th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch closed the gap to the 3DS by 242,09 units. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the 3DS by 1.43 million units. The 3DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 1.72 million units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles are off by one month.

The 40th month for the Switch is June 2020, while for the 3DS it is May 2014. The Switch has sold 13.95 million units, while the 3DS sold 15.67 million units during the same timeframe.

The 3DS has sold 24.61 million units lifetime in Japan through May 2020. The Switch is currently 10.66 million units behind the lifetime sales of the 3DS.

Switch is catching up in earnest now, and it's worth bearing in mind that at this point 3DS was much, much cheaper.

Yeah PS4 ain't selling another 33 million, not with PS5 four months away.
Still, there's no shame in not passing the second highest selling system of all time. I still expect PS4 to pass 130 million when all's said and done.

Both the Wii U and 3DS were frontloaded. Switch is still gaining momentum. This looked competitive at first, but really Switch is going to leave them in the dust.

Gap change over last 12 months: 8,029,645 – Switch

Total Lead: 4,150,000 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 59,318,752

3DS and Wii U Total Sales: 55,168,752

June 2020 is the 40th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 994,742 units when compared to the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months the gap has grown in favor of the Switch by 8.03 million units. The Switch leads by 4.15 million units.

The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), the Wii U launched in November 2012, and the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The holiday periods between the Switch and 3DS lineup, however, the Wii U holiday is offset from the Switch.

The 40th month for the Nintendo Switch is June 2020, for the Nintendo 3DS it is June 2014 and for the Wii U it is February 2016. The Switch has sold 59.32 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 55.17 million units during the same timeframe.

The 3DS and Wii U have sold 88.87 million units lifetime through June 2020. The Switch is 29.55 million units behind the 3DS and Wii U. The Wii U has been off the market for several years only selling 13.56 million units lifetime, while the 3DS has sold 75.32 million units to date and is now selling under 10,000 units per week.

Yeah this one is gonna be a curbstomp from here on out.

Switch will overtake them lifetime by the end of next year.

It is still interesting enough to see. We don't have worldwide monthly PS2 figures, so this is the closest we have. PS4 will close the gap a bit before all is said and done. Sony really needs to cut the PS4 price point.

What we do have, is the FY sales for PS2, I don't know if it would make an interesting graph or not though.

PS2
Year 1 1.41
Year 2 9.2
Year 3 18.07
Year 4 22.52
Year 5 20.1
Year 6 16.17
Year 7 16.22
Year 8 14.8
Year 9 13.7
Year 10 7.9
Year 11 7.3
Year 12 6.4
Year 13 3.4
Year 14 1.4

PS4 vs PS3 in Japan Sales Comparison - PS3 Retakes Lead in June 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3.

PS4 Vs. PS3 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 43,630 - PS3

Gap change over last 12 months: 159,668 - PS3

Total Lead: 21,818 – PS3

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 9,188,825

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 9,210,643

June 2020 is the 77th month of the PlayStation 4 being on sale in Japan. The gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 43,630 units in the last month and in favor of the PlayStation 3 by 159,668 units in the last 12 months. The PlayStation 3 has retaken the lead and is now ahead by just 21,818 units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

The 77th month for the PlayStation 4 is June 2020, while for the PlayStation 3 it is March 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 9.19 million units, while its predecessor the PlayStation 3 sold 9.21 million units.

The PS3 sold 10.47 million units lifetime in Japan. The PS4 is currently 1.28 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS3.

With the numbers it is doing currently, I would be surprised if PS4 managed to outsell PS3 in Japan.

Switch vs PS4 in the US Sales Comparison – Switch Lead Continues to Grow in June 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4.

Switch Vs. PS4 US:

Gap change in latest month: 139,168 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,139,427 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,247,940 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 20,519,720

PS4 Total Sales: 18,271,780

June 2020 is the 40th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap in the US between the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 grew in favor of the Switch when you align launches. The Switch sold 139,168 more units than the PS4 in the last month. In the last 12 months the Switch has grown its lead by 3.14 million units. The Switch currently leads by 2.25 million units.

The PS4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Switch launched on March 3, 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 40th month on sale for the Switch is June 2020, while for the PS4 it is February 2017. The Switch has sold 20.52 million units, while the PS4 sold 18.27 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 did not reach the current Switch sales until month 49 where it sold a total of 21.96 million units.

The PS4 has been available for 80 months in the US and has sold 33.64 million units in the country. The Switch is currently 13.12 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4.

Switch will ultimately win this one, or at least it should if Nintendo don't let Switch's momentum fizzle out.

This is far more likely than Switch outselling PS4 worldwide. Europe is the big difference maker.

Yeah Switch should win in North America and has already won in Japan, while PS4 will win Europe.

We shall see in the future if the lead in North America and Japan will be enough by the end to offset Europe. Though the lack of any big upcoming games for the rest of 2020 isn't a good sign.

Yeah the Switch's barren future lineup is quite worrying. This momentum won't last forever if the supply of games dries up, like it did for the Wii in 2011/2012 and the Wii U in 2016.
