Shall We Ban Bikes From Mario Kart?

Opinion: Office politics laid bare

It's fair to say that we've been hooked on Mario Kart longer than is right. As soon as Mario Kart 64 landed on Wii's Virtual Console we downloaded and played it every single lunchtime (and after work) until we got the Wii version last week.

Part of Team CVG was worried we'd play the new game for a few days before reverting back to our old N64 habits. The other bit couldn't bare that thought that that actually might happen.

Needless to say, it was a tense first session on the Wii version. Lots of looks at each other over the easier handling mechanic. Eyebrows raised over fake power-ups not blocking incoming shells. The cheesiness of the stunts. And then the unthinkable. Someone (bloody Andy) went and picked a bike. The peace was about to be shattered.

Almost a week later and we're proud to say that we DO like change and we WON'T be going back to play Mario Kart 64 anytime soon. But shall we ban bikes from office sessions?

Here's a quick look at the raging office debate. Note: corporate office pics attached for added comedy value (they make us do it).

Gavin Ogden: The clue's in the title and it's not called Mario Bike. Yes, I've played the 100cc class in the single player game and I felt dirty the whole way through it. A bit like when you had to play as the Arbiter in Halo 2.

On a straight with no power-ups or boosts (so quite a few home straights then) the bikes and their wheelie option are just too unfair to play as or against. If you're in a kart there's nothing you can do about it. Don't get me wrong, I can use the bikes just like the karts (and win) but it doesn't feel right, or fair, against people playing properly in karts. Dare I say it's like cheating? Hell yeah!
Was all about Halo 3 (now plays Mario Kart exclusively at home)

Mike Jackson: I spend hours of my life perfecting my lap times around a course in the Time Trial mode (because I'm a total geek), only to find that the top times in the world are being set by people using bikes with ridiculous turning ability.

There are certain bikes in the game that have superior powersliding properties. They don't obey the same physical laws as the other vehicles in the game. It's like they have super tyres with infinite amounts of grip. Imagine the advantage they have in multiplayer games. That's not Mario Kart. That's unbalanced. No satisfying sideways powerslides - no play. Ex-Nintendo fanboy (but current Mario Kart Wii fanboy)

Andy Robinson: At first, the idea of playing Mario Kart with bikes was about as appealing as sticking my special bits in a bees nest (as you can see from this feature I wrote before launch). But, admittedly, I've completely turned around on the two-wheelers.

They handle great, you don't have to power-slide for ten minutes to get around a corner, and you can snatch back the lead at the last second with a cheeky wheelie on the finish line.

Kart players are clearly not up to par with the bikers at the moment (just look at the fastest times online) and lapping the other players like a 16-year-old on a scooter just isn't that fun. For that reason, we've banned them from our lunchtime sessions - but they're still a great addition to the Mario Kart roster. Massive gloater (but deep down he knows we're right)

Chris Hicks: As the 'it's Mario Kart not Mario Bike' and 'the handling is unfair' arguments have already gone (like Diddy Kong in the character select screen when I get there) I'm going to rant on how they look; rubbish!

Mario Kart Wii is already full of enough twee sound effects and syrupy visuals that make Disney cartoons sombre by comparison, but the bikes are just one step too far.

There are a dozen reasons to get annoyed when someone overtakes you in Mario Kart, but when it's on a Mini Moto that even a 12-year old kid wouldn't be seen dead riding up the street on it's too much. Give us our dignity back and ditch the scooters, please. Famous for his 100-losing streak on Mario Kart 64 (looking to do better in this generation)

Stu Bishop: Ban bikes in Mario Kart Wii multiplayer. And ban them now. It's already clear as crystal from our lunchtime sessions that karts are outclassed by the two-wheeled spawns of the devil. So much so that CVG Andy actually declared himself bored with constantly winning against the chugging karts. He might have been showing off a bit, but the facts were there staring us right in the face. Bikes are evil. Get rid of them in multiplayer. Massive WarCraft Nerd (occasionally plays other games)

Well Nintendo should have seperate Time Trial leaderboards for Karts and Bikes.

I personally start to like the bikes more and more, but Karts are still my favorite. But in order to beat the times of some VGChartz members I had to switch to bikes, they're just so much faster. It's a bit sad that they aren't more equal, so you really have a choice. For Time Trial you have to use a bike.

In multiplayer it's not that big-a-deal by the way. I'm sure Rol would own anyone in a kart as well.

Bikes dont suite the game imo..

Well that's a shame.  Ah well, I'm not looking forward to this generation's MK as much as in the past.

Some of the better staff ghosts in the game use a kart and I still haven't beat all of them, like on Rainbow Road. In total there are still 6 staff ghosts left that I have yet to beat.

But yes, using a bike didn't feel that good at first, but after some time you get used to it and you don't want to go back to a kart.

So why use a kart if you have a bike?

i'm still pwning online playing with a kart (playing under the name link fyi) so i don't really think bikes are that good/bad whatever??? and i've only put in a couple of hours and i use the wii wheel exclusively.

nintendo and sega fan since i was old enough to hold a game controller.

note: my games collection on my profile is only 20ish% complete, i've got a boatload of 360,saturn and dreamcast games to add and a few ps3 games, thanks :)

ok i just got absolutely pwned online by aload of bikes on rainbow road so i retract parts of my last statement

I don't see how this is a big deal in older games you had to use certain faster characters to get the best time trials. So as much as I had more fun with toad for his recoverability and acceleration I needed to use a bowser or DK for top speed to get the best time trials. I don't see how this is much different.

The problem they have is not that some characters/vehicles are faster it is that appears to be the defining ability. They have equilized the recovery time too much or have at leat not made it long enough for the bikes.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

So why use a kart if you have a bike?

For fun? For a challenge? Because you and your friends agreed to a karts-only tournament?

And why do you always quote me? Shoo shoo, go away.

Seriously, I don't understand what's so bad about it. Driving with a bike is fun. I guess it's just one of these cases where Nintendo can't win: Stay close to the core formula = getting accused of rehashing, change a few things while the core formula still stays intact = too many changes, the game should be like the old ones.

How about deviate from core formula while keeping things balanced?  This is Nintendo we're talking about.  It's not as if they don't have the budget to spend on polishing a game to perfection these days.  Doubly so when considering that Mario Kart is a well-known and liked franchise.

Can't the karts easily take out the bikes?
