Titanfall: No New Games Currently in Development, Suggesting 2019 Title Was Cancelled

By Joe Skrebels here are no Titanfall games in development right now - suggesting a Titanfall game teased last year may have been cancelled - but Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella wants to make a new game happen.
Asked by IGN if the Titanfall franchise was over in an interview about the studio's 10th anniversary, Zampella explained, "There’s nothing currently in development. But it’s always there."

Last year, Zampella teased that there would be more Titanfall coming in 2019, with EA CEO Andrew Wilson subsequently mentioning a premium Titanfall game that would be a "twist on the franchise". It's possible that teased game isn't being developed by one of the studios Zampella is responsible for and has been delayed, but it seems more likely to have been cancelled.

It's clear the studio head still has a soft spot for the franchise that helped build his company's reputation, however: "You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen."

Titanfall and Titanfall 2 were critically acclaimed, but never saw AAA scale success. Respawn's latest games, Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have achieved that success, leading some to believe Titanfall won't be returned to directly - although Zampella's words offer a glimmer of hope.

Famously, Titanfall 2 was released just a week after fellow EA-published FPS, Battlefield 1, which undoubtedly hurt its early sales. "I would say that I’ve been on record as saying that it was not ideal," says Zampella, looking back at that decision.

Titanfall 2 has gone onto become something of a cult classic, with many citing its campaign as one of the best FPS stories in recent history. We awarded the game a 9/10 review, saying it's "rare that a sequel evolves on every part of the original concept so consistently for the better, but Titanfall 2 is that exception."

I've reached a point where I legitimately hate EA these days. They have done so many shitty things just in the last 7 years. They recently killed off Star Wars Battlefront 2 support, in spite of increasing player counts for the game and the DLC team at DICE wanting to continue support for the game, with no Battlefront 3 in development currently. They acquired Respawn and then killed Titanfall, leaving us with the rather meh Apex instead. They killed Visceral and Dead Space. They acquired 10 year Star Wars exclusivity in 2013, and it's looking like we're going to get just 4 Star Wars games out of that deal now (Battlefront 1 and 2, Fallen Order 1 and 2), with a reported 4 Star Wars games cancelled by EA that were in development (Amy Hennig's Star Wars game at Visceral, the EA Vancouver star wars game that was going to use assets from the cancelled Visceral game, the smaller star Wars game that EA planned to have ready for next-gen launch later this year, and a Battlefront spin-off). Bioware feels like they're on deaths doorstep after Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem flopped, if they don't nail Dragon Age 4 they will be lost. They shrunk Popcap, who now mainly makes mobile games, we haven't gotten a new console Bejeweled all gen, or a new Peggle since the beginning of the gen. They shrunk Maxis, we haven't gotten an actual new game from them since 2014, just expansions for Sims 4.

It feels like everything EA touches turns to shit. They have the opposite of the Midas touch. 

Dang TitanFall 2 was soo good

Well it helped spawn Apex Legends which I've logged 900 hours on 😂 so can't complain too much.

I won't miss it.

I can always boot up GOTG Titanfall 1 if I want some quality MP.

Nah the second was ok , the first one was better.

Yeah, it's a shame that it didn't sell that well. While lifetime sales were good, alot of those were late life sales once EA dropped the price to $20 or less, launch sales were far below EA's expectations, just 4m in the first 3 months, due to EA stupidly deciding to release it in October between Battlefield and CoD. EA killed the sales with their own bad decision, and then killed the series, it sucks. It's not the first time they did this though, it's a repeat of Dead Space 3 all over again, EA made a bad decision, forcing more action and less horror into it, the sales tanked as a result, and then EA killed the series. 

I've felt like that for years. They bought and killed a lot of my favorite studios back in the 1990s-2000s, notably Origin and Maxis.

Unfortunately, until the NFL and FIFA take exclusivity away from EA and allow companies like Konami and 2K to compete, they'll be able to keep being shitty with no repercussions. 

I've always said that if I had the opportunity to change just one thing in video gaming, I'd be Sega at CES 1992 and sabotage Madden 92. EA basically blackmailed Sega into giving them a sweetheart licensing deal. EA has never liked Nintendo because Nintendo refuses to kiss their asses.

Reminds me of the thread about a Titanfall developer who laughed about Switch's chances for success and my snarky response was that he should be more worried about his own series' future.
