Forums - General - My rant about Canada's net neturality and Rogers!

I get a 5GB/month limit on downloads.

So after installing Vista SP1 and Ubuntu 8.04 this month, that was about it.
It's meant to be an 8mbit connection but I'm lucky if I get 1.6kbit (200kb).

And it's $40/month

BT sucks.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

Not if you get a decent package it doesn't. Ours is bloody fast and there's NO LIMIT! Literally. No fair usage policy or any of that nonsense. I never have connection problems either. NTL are the worst I've ever been with and Toucan come a close second. I'd happily recommend BT Broadband to anyone.

It varies by provider and package here (UK). When I was with Toucan I got their supposedly unlimited package and every week they would email to say we'd exceeded capacity and it was being cut the next week. Now we're on BT's top package and it's awesome We can literally download, upload and stream stuff all day and night without any hassle from them at all.

if it's "unlimited package", why was there a "capacity" to exceed? And for that matter, if you limit a "capacity", they should never call it "UN-Limited"

Why aren't you guys complaining about it?

It's standard here. They write it into the small print that although it's unlimited you're bound by "fair usage" whatever the hell that means. We complained and complained and complained and as soon as our contract was up we switched to BT. This is the package we're on: http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=15764

Again they claim a "fair usage policy applies" but we asked them to define that before we signed up and it actually doesn't. (No I don't understand either.) We've been using them since last September with no hassle at all. My fiance's a professional photographer so he's constantly emailing very large files. He's a baseball fan and as you can't get much on UK TV he's signed up to some US package and watches it streamed over the internet. I do a bit of graphic design work so I often send large files too and I download a lot of stuff so if we don't have problems neither should 99% of other people.

Man, that is completely bull****, If there's a "fair usage" which restrict the amount you use, then it should NEVER be called "UN-limited", I'd open a class action lawsuit, I believe a similar lawsuit in US against Comcast won and now they have to refund a lot of money.

It's like saying it's an unlimited buffet, but you only get to eat 2 servings.

Also, they clearly stated that they throttle your service.

I don't know if class action lawsuits exist in the UK. Anyone? I've certainly never heard of one and we don't have much of a litigation culture. I couldn't afford to take legal action anyway.

You guys have limits on how much you can download? We just pay for constant bandwidth, and can use it as much as we want.

as much as the US tech world loooves to whine about how slow their internet connect is comparing to Japan or Korea. Yes, you guys have one of the better competitive (at least in ISP) market than other countries. Monopoly in Canada is killing the internet market.
