PS4 had literally no competition until the Switch came out, i really don't see the PS5 doing the same numbers as it since now Nintendo took back the monopoly.
I expect the same WW tbh, maybe not if they come up with something truly game changing but idk PS4 just had an open road in front of it and now there is competition again.

1)The PS4 had its best year the same year the Switch released.  And it wasn't like it released late in the year.  It had to compete with the Switch for almost 10 months that year, so that statement lacks any logical basis.  The problem is that the PS4 is 6 years old and is still $299, or only 25% lower than its launch price.  You think the Switch is still going to be pulling great numbers WW in 2023, even if it's $229?  It's not.

2)As far as Japan goes, it has been a handheld region for nearly two decades, now, so these results aren't that unexpected.  Even the extremely popular Wii only did 12.8M there, with the much more expensive PS3 doing 10.5M.  But, the 3DS, which won't even get close to 100M units sold WW, something the Wii passed, still was able to pull off 24.5M there.

3)The real thing to take away from both systems performance is that they don't really compete with each other.  PS4 sells to core gamers who prefer home consoles that can deliver power.  Switch sells to core and casual gamers who want gaming on the go, or as a secondary console to core home console owners.  The PS5, if priced well, will perform incredibly well, regardless of the Switch.  Those gamers who want a home console that is powerful enough to produce next gen games are not going to choose the much less powerful Switch as their main console going in 2020.  In fact, in mid to late 2021, when the PS5 will start to hit its stride, is when the Switch will start being seen as the old console on the market and we will start to see real declines.

1) Hm no, i was implying PS4 literally had no competition during it's early life and made so developers were supporting it a lot and even made games that haven't been on PS for AGES cause they moved to Nintendo handheld. The Wii U didn't work, the 3DS was dying and the Switch wasn't even a thing yet, it was their most viable option, until now for most games and at this rate i don't see them supporting the PS5 with as much exclusives as the PS4 since they have something else that is just performing better. Sure the Switch that was literally always out of stock didn't affect a PS4 close to it's prime cause that's just not how it works, people buy consoles at different periods. Fans buy it early on, others wait for games or better pricing. Just saying that PS4 had a special treatment from some japanese devs that would not have happened if it had competition, and the PS5 will literally be launching during Switch's prime and on top of that, a continuous decline of traditional home consoles.

2) So you agree PS5 will probably keep the decline going...

3) Y'all really like to put it that way, but there is as much casual gamers on Playstation 4 that there is on Switch if not more tbh. You get those facts out of nowhere. What even is a core audience ? Someone that plays a lot of games ? Someone that plays more "hardcore games" ? Older audience? Cause so far we already established that the Switch's audience is pretty broad and the attach rate of games per console is insane, don't think casual gamers really go on and buy that many games and that many indies... which i would consider someone more passionate would look into getting some indies compare to just buying the commercially successful Fifa and Destiny. Sorry to break it to you, but you don't have something successful until it appeals to a broad audience and on even Sony themselves said they were hoping to bring in the Wii's audience with the PS4.... yea the families. And imo if someone plays only for how pretty a game is, this is more casual player to me than someone who buys a console for games, but i guess that's just me.

But yeah, we'll see for PS5. Didn't say it will flop, but the PS4 had all the positives scenarios for it and i can't see them doing it again. Also, Sony has an history of getting arrogant when things are working well so i would not be surprised if the PS5 comes out at 500$ and nothing has changed except power.

Japanese third parties are really missing out by continuing to give the Switch half-hearted support.
