Out of the publications that I respect here are the scores...

Gamepro 9.1
GamesRadar+ 9
Areajugones 8.8
Game Informer 8.8
Everyeye 8.5
EGM 8
Nintendolife 8
Gameblog 7
Paste       7
Vg24/7 6

That puts it at a solid 8.0 on average in my book.

IGN doesn't really count because they hand out high scores like candy.
Gamespot fired their longtime staff back in 2006 for giving a game a bad review. They haven't been the same since.
Metro is a tabloid, and notoriously harsh on non-western games.
Daily Star is a newspaper, and I don't trust some non-gamer with a review score.

Currently sitting at 80 on Opencritic. That doesn't mean much right now though. IGN hands out high scores like candy. Gamespot is corrupt and pretty much accepts bribes. Then there's the joke newspapers of Metro and Daily Star that are almost guaranteed to hand out lower than deserved scores.

Waiting on Destructoid, Gameinformer, and Easy Allies. IMO those are three of the best review outlets.

"Pokémon Sword & Shield are strong first attempts for the series’ full transition to consoles. While some frustrations hold it back from true legendary status, this new generation proves the Pokémon franchise is still great more than two decades after its debut."

-Game Informer

I just noticed that shortly after posting. Reading that review now.

Nintendolife's review should be really interesting too. They usually like first party Nintendo games so that 8/10 is pretty noticeable. Reading that one next.

One thing, people. If you want to be added to the betting board, you have to choose a single score.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

9.0 from Gamespot. So the world apparently isn't ending.

That's a great score. But, I dont think the world was ending if the game got low scores... the exact opposite is happening. Apparently, the high scores must be from bribes. People are even saying that all the pokemon scores are just wrong. What I dont get and find ridiculous is, since when did an opinion, which is all a review is, become wrong just because it doesnt line up with some peoples? They're acting like their opinions are correct, but anything higher is just way over blown or paid for. I never knew pokemon drew this kind hate.

I agree.  Essentially many decided the game was trash and nothing is going to alter their preconceived notions.

Looks like it's ending up right where I expected - low/mid 80's. Most people don't care about the nitpicky problems.

I guess I'll go for 83.

Well after reading the Game Informer, Nintendolife, and Eurogamer reviews, I think I have a decent understanding of how good or bad the game is.

+ No more random battles. Poke'mon in tall grass are shown with a ! above them.

+ Most of the new Poke'mon designs are good. They are at Black/White and X/Y levels of good.

+ Many old Poke'mon finally get third forms.

+ Gym battles have all the atmosphere and excitement of a championship sports event.

+ The wild area is great.

+ You can fight higher level enemies in the wild area for quite a bit of challenge and extra XP.

+ Legendaries from past titles have been cut. No more broken OU/Uber legendaries taking up two to three spots per team.

- Mega forms have been cut.

- There's no dungeons at all. They are replaced with mini-dungeons no longer than the starter area in Red/Blue.

- Towns and buildings are incredibly linear, with little to explore.

- Dynamax raid battles are short  and shallow.

- Animations are bad.

- Flavor text on NPCs is boring, bad, and poorly presented.

- There's about 70 Poke'mon cut from the list that I genuinely cared about. How the hell are Dragonite, and Scizor not in the game????

I won't be skipping this entry but the lack of dungeons, the lack of challenge, the fact that a lot of my favorites didn't make it and the lack of post game content make me think that I will be getting this used later down the road (I don't mind waiting), since I don't think it's worth it the $75 it costs new over here.

The game was $10 off to pre-order for me. Otherwise I'd be doing the same.

I'm on this train too, got it as a gift from my fiance. Wouldn't be buying it new myself, but I like the new Pokemon designs enough to want to try it out, even if I strongly disagree with all of the direction of the game.
