Forums - Sony Discussion - PS5 will be a "greener" console than PS4

Sony has announced its commitment to a UN environmental initiative with the gaming industry, "Playing for the Planet", and as part of their commitment aims to make PS5 more "green" by consuming less electricity than the PS4, thus saving on emissions.

The company also says they will work to include issues such as sustainability and environmental awareness into its games going forwards.

I welcome that.

Using less electricity is fine. I'd prefer they leave the political statements out of their games though.

I've never understood why something as fundamental as "we should leave a healthy world for future generations" is considered political now. Surely that's something almost everyone should agree on, that its in our interest to provide the best for our children, grandchildren, etc.

Is that what Sony agreed to work into their games?  That statement is not very controversial.

Well, that's the basic idea behind sustainability; making sure the way our society functions works in the long term instead of using all the resources or damaging the environment to the point where it harms future generations down the line.

Nobody disagrees with that strict definition of sustainability. Nevertheless, I don't want video games to contain messages other than ones that add to their entertainment value.

Captain Planet from the 90's had a very "green" message of reuse, reduce, recycle and it 'made' it highly entertaining, just because there might be some underlying messaging that promotes sustainability, doesn't mean that a game is any less entertaining, people need to stop being offended over that insignificant stuff.

We should all strive towards sustainability, there is only a finite amount of resources, it's not political... It's just common sense.
Microsoft is aiming to make it's consoles Carbon Neutral going forward.

Amazon, Google, Facebook, Twitch, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and more are all jumping on the bandwagon.
It's something that everyone should get behind and support... Our Oceans are becoming more acidic and full of plastic, sea levels are rising, climate change is becoming an issue, mass-extinction on an unprecedented level and more... Something has to give at some point.

So if everyone is so worried about power consumption.... the switch should be at the very tippy top(lol) of your list for systems to buy and play.... it, by FAR, uses the least amount of power and is the epitome of sustainability.... oh.. it has a battery? Well, so do all those wireless controllers you use.... anyway, I always feel like these things are just corporate bullshit trying to play to every circle they can... when the only thing they really give a shit about is how many billions can they make of the shit they sell. None of these companies are worried about the gloabal impact... they're worried about their bank impact.

Great to hear PS5 will aim to consume less power than the PS4 (how will that work though? More power surely means more power needs). The whole messaging of sustainability and such seems odd but maybe they can make it work...
