There definitely will be PS3 slim, maybe even this year. =))

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.


Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

When FF7 was released on the PS1 the Saturn had been getting outsold 3:1 for over 6 months. The series has also had a steady decline in sales over the years and it is literally impossible for the game to sell enopugh consoles to touch the gap the Wii has created. The series has been in steady decline in sales ever since VII and it seems unlikely the game will do much more than 2.5 million lifetime. Unless the game sells 3.8 million consoles it won't be able to bring the install base to the same level. One game will never save a system.

Look at FFX sales and yahh real decline.

FFVIII   7.86 mil.
FFIX     5.30 mil.

PS2:

FFX      7.95 mil.
FFXI    .15k  (only Japan numbers are in, and Japan isn't big on MMOs)
FFXII   5.02 mil.

FFX outsold both FFVIII and FFIX, so sales have not been in steady decline.  FFXII currently stands at the 6th best selling FF (5th in Japan), and it's still selling, albeit slowly.

Since this discussion is about Japan, I think Gnizmo means Japanese sales. With 3 million FF X sold in Japan I don't think 2.5 is a ridiculous claim seen PS3's install base.

The point he's trying to make is that even if FF13 sells the 3 million FF10 sold it won't even come close to a healthy Japanese userbase. At this saleslevel it will take about 2 years to reach 3 million PS3's in Japan, and that's way too low to have a game sell over 3 million (duh). Even if FF13 alone sells a million consoles (which is HUGE) and MGS4 sells 300.000 (which is also on the generous side) it's not even close to where Wii is now.

PS1 era= 22.8 million FF games sold

PS2 era= 13.12 million FF games sold

Drop= 22.8-13.12

        =9.68

PS3 era= 13.12- era-to-era drop

What Benga said is correct. I was either at work, or half asleep at home and forgot to qualify my statement. If you look at total Japanese sales for the games you can see a steady decline from FF7-FF12 with a very slight bump from 9 to 10.

With the launch of FF13 in Japan expect PS3 consoles to sell on average over 50k a week in Japan :):):) That is what Crazzyman would say.

The thing is that in japan u need those idiotic japan only games that none of us understand. If ps3 reaches a userbase of 8-9mil in japan im sure they will be happy. Games like ffxii anf gt5 will help in that direction

Wait a minute -- why would Square want to improve the PS3's situation?  They've been publically complaining that Sony messed up and that they need to market it better, drop the price, etc.  It's already very cheap in Japan -- it's just selling 8.5k/week despite the low price.


What? 400 dollar ps3 is still expensive to the average Japanese gamer. I know that many Japanese gamers who want PS3 are just waiting for the price drop. They are usually not satisfied with only Wii games, that's why PS2 games still sell well in Japan.
