I'm going to the UK fairly soon...

So this thread interests me.

You've given us Ricky Gervais, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Dire Straits, the Cure, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Oasis and the Beatles.

For that, the world should be forever grateful to you.

@TheSource what part of the UK are you heading to?

I, for one, love living in the UK. I love our history - and everywhere is full of it! You go to Lodon and you'll see great big glass and chrome buildings next to to the Tower of London and things like that.

I love our culture. British sports, foods, movies, arts, music is some of the best in the world. And I love our unbiased non-focused-on-celebrity media.

I love the fact that a country so small is so powerful. I mean, there are states bigger than England in the US, and yet we founded some of the most powerful countries, we created one of the most used languages, we owned half the world at one point. We also have a great military now, though I don't believe that they are getting everything that they deserve.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the education system, myself. And I do have a lot of knowledge from all areas of the system.

The NHS is the largest, and broadest health care systems in the world. No other health care system is as extensive as the NHS. And although it did get shaken up a year ago with MRSA, etc. You don't here cases like that anymore, which would mean that the problems don't really exist anymore.

British comedy rules over American comedy. Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Bottom, The Young Ones, That Mitchell and Webb Look, The Peep Show, Open All Hours, Some Mothers do Have 'Em, One Foot in the Grave, Monty Python, The Good Life, My Family.

Where the government need to invest in now is giving teens something to do. Opening up more youth clubs, and teen-aimed nightclubs would give a lot of kids something to do instead of standing on street corners, beating kids up. They also need to invest in buildingup communities again. More community centers, fayres, fates, sports and social clubs, etc.

The government should also encourage more corporations to keep as much British as possibly, instead of outsourcing to other countries. This'll help stimulate the economy, and make Britain less dependable on other country's economies.

1. Our media is not "unbiased". Every paper and channel has some kind of leaning, most of them just don't make it outrageous. There isn't a media outlet in the world that isn't biased in some way.

2. We are not powerful anymore. We used to be but now we have serious delusions of grandeur.

3. The government is pushing businesses out of the country with high taxes. Shire Pharmaceutical have just announced they're following Yahoo, Experian, Kraft and Shell out of the country and BP and GlaxoSmithKline are about to do the same. The last thing businesses are going to do is bring jobs to the UK when any profits they make are immediately taken by the government.

@ferret, ok, our media isn't unbiased. But, have you ever watched an American news cast? I mean, judge the BBC to any other news coporation in the world, and I bet the BBC would come up top.

And yeah, the government is pushing businesses out. But this won't go on forever, once the conservatives get back into power (I'm predicting next national election), I reckon they might cut the taxes back down again for the rich, especially if they're in for as long as Labour is/was.

I'll be visiting the UK for the study abroad program at my University

Cool, which one are you going to? I had a load of US exchange students in my halls in my 1st year. Can't really remember much besides they were obsessed with beer pong

@Samuel

I love your outlook on Britain, and I agree that we have a great culture. Everywhere you go in the UK, you can find old and new buildings standing side-by-side.

Sure, Britain isn't the all-powerful nation it once was. But it still has one of the largest economies, has the 2nd largest military spending, and has made a huge impact on how the world is today, that's pretty amazing for a country so small.

Another thing I love about the UK is the huge renovation that is going into many of our urban centres. Of course there are problems, as there are in all countries.

There is one thing I'm particularly unhappy with, and that's the increasing amount of surveillance that is going on. The government is getting too involved in everyday life. This can't go on for much longer though, we're a democratic nation and we can still vote to change these types of issues.
At the next elections, even if the Conservatives don't win (though they most likely will), Labour will be forced to make a lot of changes to what they are currently doing.
