Forums - Sony - Did PS3, really copy 360 and Wii?

Today I was in a heated debate with my friend about how ps3 "copied" 360 and wii thats why it is selling when walking home from school. He said things like tihs:

PS3 is copying in game music player and messaging

PS3 copied motion controls

PS3 copied the guide button

PS3 copied the sims and Mii

First off, 360 blatantly copied the wii motion controls, and they copied the HDMI port on the back of their console with the Elite. The Xbox copied dvd drive off of ps2

But my point was that every system needs to have this kind of technology to keep up and compete with other consoles. Same goes for things like cars. If Toyota was still using cars and engines from the 50's, do you think they would be as successful as they are now?

They didnt copy, they took ideas and made it into something uniqe and better. Copy is when you do the exact, same thing like photo copying a sheet of paper.

YOu often mention your friends said this and that and usually it is something stupid, i suggest you get some new friends. Now on topic, all video games have something from another console so yea copying is the norm.

Mil. Sellers:

Wii:      25 titles       101.4 mil total    avg 4 mil per title

PS3:     14 titles      28.6 mil total    avg ~2 mil per title

360:     41 titles      89.8 mil total   avg  >2 mil per title

I agree copying is the wrong word

They took inspiration from the others in many ways, but it was not just blatant copying

Even the SIXAXIS is intended to be used in a different way to the wiimote

A guide button is really a home button, which is obvious if it is a media centre type thing, it is basically a main menu button

Sony is putting in custom soundtracks cause that is what people want, same with in game XMB

Of course Sony copied Nintendo. They copied Nintendo with the PS1 and they are coping Nintendo again. The more new products and ideas Nintendo comes out with, the better. It is good that Sony and MS copy Nintendo because it makes for better games.

Because obviously Nintendo never benefitted any from copying Sony and MS, such as adding on online service and moving away from cartridge based games.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Hmm, it seems your friends are pretty stupid.

I suggest you bring them over to play your PS3 and convert these PS3 virgins into sensible Sony followers.

Yeah the ps3 did all of this. Wii, and 360 just sat there and left it happen. Idk who these people sony, microsoft, and nintendo are. Of course the ps3 didn't copy them sony did./Joke

I wouldn't go as far as calling having a DVD drive 'copying'. DVD was the standard format for movies and games for well over a year before the Xbox came out. It's like saying Nintendo copied Atari because they used cartridges.

This is a bit of a feisty situation we have going on here now. The main reason people say Sony copied Nintendo is because, the very day after Nintendo unveiled their amazing controller to thunderous applause, Sony unveiled their 'tacked-on' motion controls. Since we'd never even heard anything about new functions for the PS3 controller, it seemed like they pulled an all-nighter and drew up the plans for their conference the next day. This idea was exacerbated by the fact that no launch games used the motion controls well, and few have since.

Microsoft waited quite a long time to get their motion-sensing controller out, and even now (if it exists) it will only be a barely-used peripheral rather than the standard. However, the fact that the supposed scans show it being nearly identical to the Wii-mote lends credence to the fact they could also be trying to cash in on Wii's success.

So, the question is, who is really 'copying' and who's just going with what's popular?

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I think sony is going a different direction than MS with its "total entertainment center" strategy. They have gaming, soon to have movies and music, and then home will be something like no other console has (whether it will work is questionable). MS is "all about gaming" and Nintendo is "all about casual gaming", so Sony is "all about entertainment". I think its taking awhile for sony to get to where they want to be, but they are slowly getting there. Just my thoughts on the subject...

Everyone copies someone else. It whether or not they improve on the idea or simply add the feature that makes it acceptable to me.

Example, Nintendo didn't create waggle. However they reinvented its use and created a very unique experience on Wii. Sony simply copied motion from MS and other 3rd party controllers for PC. Part of the reason the sixaxis has no good implementation in ps3 games.
