Sony's rumoured TV's for CES next week sound very similar with support for HDMI 2.1 coming. This is the next big upgrade and great to see it coming to the mass market in 2019. Just in time for the PS5. The only other big upgrade I'm waiting for is to the display panel. OLED's have been using the same display panels for years now and will keep the same one this year. The hope is that in 2020 we will see the launch of high emission LED screens which will be the next major upgrade. HDMI 2.1 and an improved OLED display were my 2 main priorities for my next gen TV I plan to get in 2021.

LG has unveiled its 2019 4K OLED TV line-up comprising C9, E9, and W9 with 4K resolution, and Z9 with 8K resolution. The TVs come with HDMI 2.1, improved gaming performance with VRR, an upgraded video processor, webOS updates, and ”AI”.

HDMI VRR, lower input lag & improved motion LG explains that the upgraded ”second-generation Alpha 9” video processor has improved algorithms for color and motion. This includes an upgraded black frame insertion system called ’OLED Motion Pro’ that now operates at 100/120Hz (compared to 50/60Hz last year) and with shorter black frame cycle (25% vs. 50% last year). LG says the system eliminates flicker and maintains brightness, which were FlatpanelsHD’s two main concerns with the BFI system in the 2018 LG OLED models. Other improvements include a separate ”smooth gradation” picture setting that no longer reduces resolution.

Outside of VRR, the TVs will deliver 13 ms input lag (in 1080p and 4K HDR), LG tells FlatpanelsHD. This is probably the lowest input lag on a TV today, depending on what competitors have achieved this year. Lastly, LG said that all calibration settings are now available in the Game picture mode and that a new Game setting can be engaged for all picture modes in the TVs.

So I'll hold my 1080p TV until the release of ps5. Then I will change the set, suitable for next 5 or 7 years.

Good shout. Imo it was a mistake buying a TV last year if you intend to buy the PS5. Not only will HDMI 2.1 and OLED with low input lag be standard for 2020/21 but next year we should also see the introduction of top emission OLED screens. Couple this with the TV software improvements you'll be getting a much better deal around the ps5 launch and the year after. 

I got my 4K tv back in 2017. So I should be ready for an update in 2020. Better yet wait till november 2020 and buy the next years 4k tvs when I know there will be deals and those will be better than the ones released this year.

If I was you considering you got one in 2017 and you intend to buy a ps5 i'd wait until 2021 at least. You'll get an amazing set at a good price with worthy upgrades over your current one. If ps5 comes out Q2 2020 surely you'll be ok playing the ps5 on the old one for a year.

Oh I agree. Its what I would most likely end up ding especially considering that I want my next TV to be a 75" at minimum. 

I went from using a projector to getting a 55" 4k TV specifically for the PS4 pro and HDR ad because I was honestly tired of the hassle of using projectors. So its good knowing I can start working my way back up the screen real estate scale.

No reason I shouldnt be able to get a 77" or 85" TV for under $3000 in 2021........ cause right now those can be had for around $3500. Give me a good LED with full array local dimming..... oled burn in be damned.
