Forums - Nintendo - Wii, third party support by the end of this gen?

If you look at how third party support for the Wii changed from September 2006 to September 2007 (moving from 'no support' to plentiful but poor support) and how it has changed from September 2007 to today (plentiful support with many adequate and good games) I think its fair to say that if the Wii's support continues to improve at a similar pace it will be better than the PS3/XBox 360 by this time next year.

 3. Again you prove my point..conducting an orchestra, painting a fence, cutting a tree...yes wii will do those parts in games great. However, you can not base a whole game on one gameplay mechanic...therefore you have to put it in as mini games or mini quests. Mario Gallaxy and Smash brothers would control better as a whole with a gmaecube controller...very few people will deny that.

In any case, I think that if what you people saying is true, and game devs start using the wii as their main develping platform, the whole industry will be taking a step backwards until wii gets a hard drive or some decent online support and a normal controller for 80% of games out there that don't need to have random stick waggling. Not to mention the loss in visual quality we will lose if this trend takes place...

I didn't like the control in Super Mario Sunshine but SMG controls fine.  SSBB plays fine, and you know, it offers more controller options than any game on PS3 or 360.

DS has 3rd party support than PS3 or 360 and it doesn't have a dozen buttons.  It does offer very good control on same games and not so good control on others.  However, Wii has various control options and offers much better control than the PS3 or 360.  Chances are, the next Sony and MS consoles will not match the Wii in control.

Bioware game designer: "We have this new awesome RPG coming out for the wii"

EA exec: "Wow, this game is amazing...but its on the wii...where are the wii mini games? where is the part when you paint the fence even though it doesn't belong in this game? Back to the design room Mr. Bioware designer!!!"

Bioware designer: "But this game doesn't need those aspects"

EA exec: "Then why didn't we make it for the ps360? it would look better and be much bigger in scope with amazing online?"

Bioware designer: OK, chief. The budget rises from 20million to 60...

EA exec: Oh, don't worry, money is nothing to us; what we care about is the experience the consumer gets.

"Why was doom 3, Halflife 2, Far cry and ninja gaiden done on xbox only?"

All but one started on the PC and the PC was the main platform.

I hear what everyone here is saying and I know that I am in a minority...but I stand by my opinion.
Quantity of games doesn't mean best 3rd party support. Just because games are cheaper to make and they keep coming in flocks doesn't mean that Bungie, Sqaure, Capcom, Konami, Epic...etc will put their best people to work on Wii titles. Sure they will release some fun games on the wii that took a weekend to make and will sell well...but these studios won't invest the big bucks in to developing a game like Resident Evil 5 from scratch on a visually and feature wise inferior platform.

If Resident Evil 5 or GTA4 is made for the wii and then ported to xbox360 and ps3 it would be a huge step backwards for the developer.

Also, how many of you that are posting here against my post actually own a ps360? All I see is "Wii code:...." in most of your signatures. How would you know anything about what good online component, hard drive and HD graphics are worth if you don't own the consoles you are arguing against.

I'm not saying that wii will not get great 3rd party support and lot of games. It really depends on your definition of 3rd party support. Bee Movie game is 3rd party support sure and it perfect for the wii...

It also may start getting the big titles like call of duty 5 and Resident evil 5...which is great. But those titles will always be inferior on the wii compared to ps360. Just because Wii gets rock band...doesn't mean it has the Rock Band worth playing out of all the consoles. Wii will have its own party type games as that is what it does best and probably a lot of good support as its selling rally well. But it will never be looked like 3rd party leader for devs...more like a quick cash grab. Wii fans will hear a lot of news that goes like "Sega/Capcom remaking old title for wii...". This is 3rd party support too right...

I bought the wii when it came out and was intrigued by the controls. I could have played a game called "rub one off for winnie the poo" and I would have thought it is amazing. However a year later, wii controls do not fascinate me the same way. It has become a routine as every game is using the controller the same way.

Racing games make you twist it to the side and tilt, adventure games get the nunchuk going, and shooters...well other than Metroid which was great...none of them work at all.

So now that the initial wow factor of the wii mote is starting to calm down it is time for gamecube turbo to show off what else it has in its card deck... I'm still waiting for that next gen experience where I can trash talk to people while i beat them in brawl...download demos of new games...play VC games with a freind from his house...and put the 58 inch 1080p TV to good use while playing wii games.

And I don't think Nintendo will bother with these upgrades as they are making tonnes of cash as is...leaving 3rd parties in the tough spot of making the same exclusive mini game based games over and over or making visually and game play wise inferior ports on ps360 games.

Also keep in mind that PS3 and 360 are splitting the market larger than wii alone and multiplatfomr titles are all the rage. If anyone thinks that DMC4 would have sold more on the wii rather than ps360...I think you are special.

Also...why is bluray considered the next gen when it comes to movies when all it offers is a prettier picture? Silence of the Lambs is not a better movie cause its on bluray... Yet when it comes to videogames, you people claim visuals don't matter. Sounds like some people here are in denial or hypocritical on the graphics issue...

Though i partially agree with what you say, those things you listed are not exactly next gen, those feature you i have bolded were available last gen and even longer when it comes to PC gaming. What i consider next gen, are games that do something completely new and revolutionary, thats not to say it always boils down to controls, for example during the 64/ps1 days, i considered zelda OOT a next gen game, it did something better and newer than any game of that time, during the PS2 days i would call GTA III a next gen game. There really isn't a game that has been released this gen that has wowed me to call it next gen they seemed like just improved version of previous games, though i would like to say Wii sports is the next gen game though i would rather like call it the  foundation of this Gens new next gen game (hope i haven't confused you LOL).

I'm not sure what you are trying to say since this is a contradiction.  Do you mean Silence of the Lambs is not better because it's on Bluray, and games are not better with better graphics?  Or do you mean Silence of the Lambs is better because it's on Bluray, and games are better with better graphics?

Yes and no.

Yes more support but its not the type most of you want.

You wont get the likes of End war or Assassins Creed, you can forget any huge main FF title or a GTA.

Its all due to demographics, 3rd party's know damn well who buys the wii and what sales. They wont waste their big "real" games on the wii, they will make more casual and mini game type stuff for it.

Looking at COD4 or Assassins sales, why the hell would they not make it a PS3/360 game ?

Maybe, but I´m more curious to find out what kind of games most 3rd parties will be releasing....only if,or when,I see many "big" 3rd party titles coming out for this system will I say Nintendo has truly gone back to the NES/SNES days.

Im saying that the movie is the same...but it is considered the next step because it looks better. Therefore a game that looks better should be considered the next step too no? Guitar Hero 3 looks better on ps360 than Wii...is it not a better game experience?

@ Bornfirst

I don't know...I know what you are saying but I don't know how much new game design ideas we will see at this point.  There is so much out there that can be tweeked and adjusted to provide a new expereience now that I don't think a revolutionary idea is needed this generation. Xbox live/PSN was next gen for consoles this generation.  Also universal 720p support was next gen for consoles too. Xbox did 720p on 5% of games last gen. PS2/GC did it on 0%. DLC was next gen. COD4 online play is something not possible on consoles before this gen so that should be considered next gen.  In game achievements...next gen. Wii mote is next gen too, well an idea for next gen that developers have yet to fully adopt as next gen...too bad its on a piece of hardware that doesn't support any of the previously listed next gen ideas. Its much easier to add motion controls to PS360 than add the rest to wii...

The thread asked about quantity of 3rd party support not percieved quality support by gamers.
PS3 and XBOX supporters tend to equate 3rd party support to hardcore mature games, but that is no measure of 3rd party support, just the type of games being developed by 3rd parties.
It is obvious that at this point the PS3 and XBOX have better support in terms of Mature titles, because that is their demographic strength, and publishers just want to make as much money as possible.

"¿Por qué justo a mí tenía que tocarme ser yo?"

I think the support will increase but I don't feel it will be dominating until maybe the final year of the Wii. Developers on the whole really lost a lot of oppurtunities to get something substantial out for the Wii. I don't feel like they'll be able to play catch up until the Wii's final year, maybe 18 months. I do however expect Nintendo's next home console to receive a large amount of support from the get go. One problem I see is that the 360, PC and PS3 can share releases made by the same team to create identical experiences, and until the Wii passes the hardware sales of the 360 and PS3 combined, very many titles will still be created for them, including many high profile ones. On top of that, Sony and Microsoft both have a tendency to put money in developers' faces to ensure games stay with them, and as far as we know Nintendo is not into those practices. Long story short, what you see now will only get marginally better year in and year out until Wii takes a commanding lead.
