Forums - Sales Discussion - July 2018 NPD: Switch #1, Octopath Traveller #1 software, UPDATE

According to Benji(market (insider) Pokemon Let's Go interest is lower than other previous mainline title and has 0 effects on Switch sales currently, while Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the opposite in comparison since E3 Direct with a huge interest from new buyers.

As it has already been said, Lets Go will have little impact as fara as the core fans are regarded.Where it might and most likely will cause an impact is with casual fans, those who play Pokemon occasionally and specially those who have played the originals. But that effect will only start being felt when Nintendo go all in with marketing(read it as having ads on TV and such)

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Perhaps they wanted a Pokemon game to come out this year (or else they will have nothing) soooo they made something easy to make.

And probably how from 3DS to Switch is HUGE leap in terms of graphical power and removing the dual screen which they used since the DS.

Then explain why Go catching mechanics replaced Wild Pokemon battle despite claiming Let's Go is part of mainline title according to their press presentation. They can easily make a game that caters toward both core and casual go crowd with an option to chose between normal and new gameplay element at the start of the game.

Masuda is really a dinosaur when it comes to gameplay decision.

They need to stop with the idea of bringing Wii and Mobile crowd asap, Switch is currently benefited greatly from core Nintendo fans as opposed to the Wii.

1 2 switch + Labo + Pokemon Let's Gp = reminiscent of Wii era nightmares

Yet wii sold 100 million.

If they want to sell more switches, they have to expand the audience. People who want a core pokemon game will buy a switch for 2019 game. If you see the influence in hardware of a second core pokemon game is very slim, because people already bought the console for the first core game(happehap with 3ds).

With a game targeted to different audiences, they can sell more consoles. And kimishima said that would be the strategy to sell 20 million this year. When starting get close to winter, and pokemon go players couldn't get out very often to play, they will have the option to play a new adventure at home, catching in the way they are used to, they can join with someone in the house. It can possibly be huge, but we won't see this effect in summer while they are enjoying pokemon go. Just need more marketing applied correctly (TV, or even on pokemon go app), and a switch bundle, marketing the similatities and the integration with the phone app.

Makes sense, every bit of news that comes out for Lets Go just makes core fans of the series less interested.

New mega evolutions (i mean like 10+) would sell the game better imo. But its a game where super casuals have to buy, not most hardcore ones

Nintendo #1 again.

Nintendo #1 again.

Actually, they've been since forever now. I mean, this month alone they outsold Sony and Microsoft combined by a factor of 2:1.

Unless you're talking about individual SKUs.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Thanks for the charts! I have a request though.

Could you tell me what the launches aligned sales for NSW, PS4, XBO, Wii U & 3DS after 17 months are? I know the Nov vs March launch periods make a direct comparison a little flawed but im still interested.

Well, I do have this chart I already had made up:

Last year, the Switch sold about 4.87M, while in 2014 the PS4 sold about 4.7M. So far this year, the Switch has sold almost exactly as much as the PS4 did in the Jan.-July period of 2015. The PS4 actually did slightly better in both Q1 & Q2 2015 than the Switch did in Q1 & Q2 this year, but July made up the difference. Overall, the Switch is still keeping pace with the PS4. And it's blowing the 3DS's sales out of the water. The 3DS's LTD sales after its first 17 months was 5275k, while the Switch is at about 6670k.

I just got back home from work and now I have to leave in just a minute. So I'll post the rest of my charts when I get home later tonight... if I remember.

Very interesting so it means that so far the Switch is keeping pace with one of the best selling consoles ever. I'm guessing the Wii has them both beat for that period right?

Thank you, so PS4 was around ~7.6 million after 17 months?

3DS-5.3 million

NSW-6.7 million

PS4-7.6 million

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

The ps4 finally loses a month. Although it did extend its lead over it's nearest rival so there's that.

Okay. Here's a couple more charts.

These charts are great!  Thanks for posting them.  I had no idea the 360 and XB1 were so closely aligned.  That alone speaks volumes.
