Nintendo is out to control the world!!(!)!!
PCs and handhelds don't really compete, they're totally different.
Anyway, I don't think anyone posted the DS SW sales of 2.6m. The low attach rate is blamed on piracy.
VGC has DS at 2.27M in "Others" on the "Others >>> Hardware by Region" page.
Where else has DS launched? I would guess Russia makes up the bulk of "Other Europe." But then there's India, China, South Africa, etc., all in "Other"... Has DS sold less than 900K in all those places combined? Or has it not launched in those places?
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Thats one of the reasons the DS does well in korea I think. As the DS offers a very different style of gaming to the pc. They do coincide well.
Russia
South Africa
Some other countries may have local distributors, but Nintendo doesn't really support developing markets very well. Also, whilst these countries may have large populations, the GDP per capita is generally low and the gaming market outside of PC gaming isn't particularly developed.
The countries with most sales in "others" will be the developed countries in Asia, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Remember, all of these countries have huge levels of piracy, so whilst HW sales may be significant, SW sales are far lower than in Europe & NA.
"Wii, equipped with a 729 megahertz IBM Broadway processor and an innovative wireless controller, will be sold for 220,000 won (US$226) starting April 26, Nintendo Korea, the Korean unit of the Kyoto-based company, said in a press conference in Seoul. The system was first launched in Japan and the U.S. in September 2006."
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha, so much for Korean journalism. They don't even do enough research to figure out when the system originally launched. Pathetic.
