super mario rpg 2.

Seeing Chrono Trigger in that style would be nice to see, but I'd really, really love to see an RPG using that style, but with real time combat. The art style of Octo drew me in, but the turn based combat more or less stopped me from wanting to purchase it.

Tactics Ogre.

Honestly though, I'll take another Tactics Ogre/FFT (not FFTA) game in any style at this point.

So much this. I'd kill for a new Tactics Ogre game. This is the scenario I feared when Square/Enix started gobbling up all the good JRPG IPs. I think the last Tactics Ogre was The Knight of Lodis on GBA. Has there been a new Ogre Battle since Ogre Battle 64?

A Mario and Luigi RPG in this style would work well IMO

None. That's what I'm afraid of. If a bunch of other companies start going this route, and can't even be bothered to create a 3D world for their Turn-Based RPGs, then I'll have to go right back to almost exclusively retro gaming, like I was before the genre finally started moving forward again with games like Persona and Trails of Cold Steel.

This is a big step backwards for the genre, and I REALLY hope it's not going to become a trend.

Its a unique artstyle. How is it a huge step backwards?

Moving from mid-tier 3D games, back to low-budget 2D games.

I want a sequel to this game. I don't necessarily want everyone just copying this art style. There's room for improvement with what they've come up with, so I'd like to see how they could improve and add more to the style.

Playing devil's advocate against myself, Acquire did name the technique as HD-2D so I'd imagine they'd want other developers to know what the style is called if they're going to copy it. So if I had to choose a game other than a sequel, I'd say the Mana games. I'd want a more 3D art style for a Chrono Trigger remake. Something more like the Dragon Quest XI engine.

i was playing FFVI last week, and i couldnt stop thinking, wow, this game would be so nice with octopath graphics,,,

I highly doubt this game was much cheaper to make than many 3D JRPGs.

I would have preferred the Secret of Mana remake or a sequel in this style actually - rather than the cheap looking cutesy cartoon style they opted for, which was somewhat off-putting for me.

The Secret of Mana remake would have been so pretty if they used the 2D/HD artstyle.
