Think it's worth mentioning that this isn't Sony Interactive/PlayStation, this is Sony Group/Sony's parent.

True but it's still 1B taken from the acquisition and investment budget that SIE/Playstation are a part off. So not great news for Playstation fans overall.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony make a play for Epic Games in the future.

Yes, and Fortnite is extremely huge, if Sony gets Fortnite which they will. In many decades fortnite will print money for Sony in a explosive way. They also get Epic store which is like Steam. I have a feeling the rumored AAA acquisition and this news is that Sony has alot of money more than what anyone in many forums and most of social networks are underestimating how much they actually have?

That would be crazy to see, but I highly doubt Sony has that kind of money. Sony as whole, has a market cap of $121 billion. Epic's valuation after this latest investment is a little over $31 billion. Sony would most likely have to get a deal upwards of $50 billion when it's all said and done. That would be insane if Sony actually ended up making that happen when a single purchase cost is over a third of your company's overall value. Sony has money, but they don't have that Microsoft "f&^k you" money.

I personally would love to see that happen. Sony instantly has a foothold in the PC market as well as access to the largest gaming engine in the industry. Which would be kinda funny considering Sony primarily uses proprietary engines for their games lol. Although, I wouldn't compare Epic Games Store to Steam lol. On paper, they're similar, but nowhere near complete of an experience as Steam.

Take Two just made an acquisition that was 70% of their market cap.

I'd also argue that Sony's market cap is pretty undervalued. Activision was sold for $70 billion, and yet SIE by themselves is much bigger revenue, profit wise than Activision, not including any of the other ventures that Sony is in.

Good point! I'm very interested to see what kind of deal Sony can orchestrate to make it happen.

Because it would be very odd if Sony kept investing more and more into Epic without wanting take it any further.

This is definitely the case for some users. Others still view Sony as the same company as they were a decade ago.

Sony could definitely go all in for one massive acquisition of Epic Games, Take Two Interactive, or even Warner Media Discovery if they really wanted to, using a combination of stock + cash, or even getting a loan. But doing so would leave Sony on the sidelines from making multi - billion dollar acquisitions indefinitely.

Yep, if they really wanted to, or if they felt like they needed to, they could. I would say it's more of a last resort kind of thing though.

I am not really convinced they will go after a publisher though. The big reasons to go after a studio/publisher are their IP, their employees, etc. A lot of these things I don't think Sony cares that much about. They have a lot of confidence in being able to create new IP. They can be more selective about studios if they're just buying a studio itself. They can pick where, who, and that is probably more appreciable to Sony than buying a big bag of game franchises and lots of studios that might not fit with the current direction.

Although who knows, I might be wrong. And they might acquire Square Enix/Capcom/someone else later this year. All bets are pretty much off at this point in time.

I mean, Sony did state they were shopping for IP during an interview with Variety this year, and gaming is really the only sector where they can get it.

I was finally able to 100% God of War (2018) on PC and my god......what an experience! This was one of those once in a generation type games.

I was only 5 hours into the game when I decided to try again to get a PS5 directly through Sony, and finally was able to just so I can play Ragnarok on Day 1! I don't even care if it one day does come to PC. I'll just double dip lol

Those Valkyrie's though

I watched the Ragnarok reveal trailer again just to get re-excited!

Sony should go for TakeTwo and Konami and a 3rd AAA major studio with sales power like Namco Bandai to combat Microsoft Zenimax/Bethesda and Activision Blizzard 2 punch it'll be 3 vs 2 and while Microsoft is waiting for 1 year. Epic games should be later, though they are better in sales than TakeTwo. Metal Gear just 1 game sells like 10 million + have kojima bought by Sony, Name of the game is Major Franchises that sell above 10+ million.

I think acquiring Square & Capcom would be a lot more beneficial to the PlayStation platform, while being significantly cheaper, than acquiring Konami and Bandai Namco. And while its certainty possible, countering a major acquisition like Activision Blizzard is going to be difficult, and its unclear whether or not Sony would be willing to go all in to do so. However, I do think if Sony were to put all their chips on the table to make one big acquisition, Warner Media Discovery would be the target, since that would elevate Sony into a media titan in prime position to dominate the subscription service landscape.

I'd argue God of War is about as close to a perfect game as I've played in the last decade. many of my favourites, like Breath of the Wild, Bloodborne, Elden Ring, RDR2, Smash Ultimate, etc...all have elements they could improve upon or areas where they faltered (performance/framerate, weapon durability, a slow start, etc), but God of War is without flaw. Amazing from top to bottom. no weak points in that game.

All the more impressive that it was a sequel to a game series I actually hated.

My Console Library:

Yep, certainly there could be changes to GoW based on one taste and expectatives, but the game itself on what it is doing and want to achieve is without fault.
