So your answer is that noone else other than Sony backed that number, that's the important thing to note here... |
Sony said 800k, but it could of been anywhere from 750k - 800k, which Sony would of just rounded up.
Companies will always use the best looking number, and will round up when ever possible.
Look at microsoft and their shipped numbers. If they would shipped 10.5 instead of 10.4 they would of announced 11 million shipped.
It's not technically lying, its just rounding.

So you're basing the 800k number on the 600k plus a few news reports. Now the question is, where does the 600k one come from? ...

Great to have all this stuff up. I'm taking these numbers with a grain of salt, as this is the first time I've seen weekly European numbers, and they clearly aren't easy to find. Still extremely impressive, and the accuracy can only get better with time. Interesting to note how the DS is the first console ever, as far as I can tell, to have sold more in Europe than the US, and our PSP numbers are going to be greater as well in a few weeks if this rate keeps up. Looks like handhelds are all the rage at the moment. Suppose this also means I'm untrendy for having one computer, three consoles, and zero handhelds. =P
Also, I wanna add this. I hope you've noticed that the site includes weekly historical data broken down by country, almost. If you wanna know how ioi got to the current numbers, short of asking for retailers addresses and phone numbers, this your best aid.
Don't pay so much attention to Diomedes. He's a Sony fan... You can check that on almost every Spanish gaming forum.
When Sony sells one million consoles in either Europe or Japan, I bet they'll make a press release. That's why, even without taking into account the data of this website, I assume they haven't reached that number yet in Europe.
On topic, great job ioi. :)

It was reported only about 2 weeks ago, that the PS3 had an install base of 36k units.
(the Wii had approx 80k, and the 360 120-150k).
There is absolutely, ZERO percent chance, that the PS3 has sold more than 50k in Australia (as of today). This is the quiet time of the year for consoles (holidays all over, etc..). You can also check the latest Australian charts (for a few weeks running), basically no PS3 titles in there.

Great job ioi! it's fantastic to have hardware sales for ALL territories finally. Can we also expect european software sales in the next weeks or months or shouldn't we expect that?
Are this Germany numbers only Germany or are Switzerland and Austria also included? (The three countries are often counted together.)
About the accuracy: We have seen with the NA weekly numbers that ioi is doing his best to get as close as possible and that he gets very close. I think this numbers are already quite accurate and in a couple of weeks, when ioi has some experience, they will be very accurate. Oh and about Diomedes, never mind him, he states every week that numbers are not accurate just because they are not in his favour.
And something about the numbers themselves: I think we can see that europe is sonyland because of the psp numbers, they are very good. europe is also wii's slowest market because it's the only place where the psp is able to outsell it on a weekly base, and that the ds sells more in europe than in NA shows that the slower wii performance is not due to the size of the market. I conclude that IF a PS3 catchup is possible somewhere, it is in europe.
