I’ve had it since I was born. I inherited it from my mother. Only about 5-10% of cases are heritary. The rest can be from damage, brain tumors, etc. It’s rarely a diagnosis and typically a symptom. If you have tinnitus, and haven’t had your doctor check it out, I’d recommend you do. There are often underlining issues that cause it. Its worse in my left ear due to having surgery as a child on my ear, which left scar tissue that bothers my nerves

Yeah, it sucks. I've had ringing in my ears 24/7 for years, it gets really bad at points but most of the time I'm just used to it.

Every few years I will develop a clogged ear which tends to last from several weeks to several months.

Wait a minute, has this been something you've been experiencing on and off for some time now, or has it really only been for the past 6 days? Because that's a short amount of time to have been diagnosed, and found support groups, etcetera. To me that indicates you are worrying about something that might go away on it's own.

Sorry for the late response but I'm in complete shock right now....because you're right it's gone! 

I honestly can not believe this. It was ringing a high pitched sound for 6 days staight non stop...until last night the ring stopped but there was still a consrant sound of exactly a flash bang going off but I noticed a major difference. I had to get sleep because it kept me up for the week. I just woke up around 200 pm and honestly didn't realize it the moment I woke up until I came to and the noise was gone!

I cried to be honest. Ive been up doing research...contributing to an online support group...reading horror stories that are just unimaginable...and I was trying to accept with dealing with this condition the rest of my life.

VG I feel your pain man. Your stance of acceptance and dealing with it are shared by many but there are people with extreme cases where the ringing is so loud in both ears they've contemplated suicide. And you can tell they're being genuine.

I am extremely lucky but also 95% sure of the cause. Which is ototoxicity from my meds. Ive ruled out the other 3 most reported causes being exposure to loud noise...infection...or tumor.

Im still going to follow up with an ENT (ear nose throat) to make sure theres no infection hiding. 

Thank you all for your support. I'm still in complete shock and my thoughts go out to those suffering because thats what it is...a form of torture. 

I think we need to bring awareness to the world honestly. There's little to no resource for tinnitus and obviously no cure. (The ringing is in my ear as I type this but its been like that before its because of the position Im in on my couch...) 

There are people suffering. VGP stay strong. Youll be in my thoughts. I hope one day yours alleviates. I mean that with every ounce of my soul.

Had it for years... not terrible most of the time, working in a factory at a young age (19) probably did it. It's not particularly problematic. But its noticable when in a quiet environment (I can hear it in the background right now :D - most of the time i forget its there.

I probably have some other issues with my ears as I have had serious issues with vertigo which was fun, not had an attack for about 8 years, but yeah that was fun. I thought I might have meniere's disease but the Dr's never really confirmed it or were very good at diagnostics. My ears can be very sensitive to noise,.

On topic: I get it really bad sometimes to the point I get a headache. It's only been since I got chopped in the head though.

It's very common this day and age, probably as a side effect of headphones and hearing loss on higher frequencies. There are probably other psychosomatic factors involved and it probably even relates to jaw muscles and bones.

According to my uncle, who is an ENT doctor, caffeine and stress tend to make it worse, so I'd avoid that. Paying attention to it is surely a way to induce stress, so try to distract yourself.

Ugh I feel for you... my nervous system went haywire following a surgery for a bit and, among many other symptoms, I developed the ringing in the ears as well. Thankfully they all subsided so I only really hear the ringing when I listen for it now, and my left ear tends to get all garbled like a blown out speaker around very loud noises, but that's about it.

I hope it abates or you find some means of lessening it! It was frustrating to learn just how little was known about Tinnitus and how few options there are for it.

Thanks. What I tend to do is have a fan running so that it's harder to notice, because the quieter it is the more noticeable it is.

Thank you guys but I've posted it's gone away. By some miracle. I'm still going to follow up with an ENT. I now understand what people suffering from t are going through and the sheer amount of will and determination it takes to cope with t or extreme cases. I'm shocked how many others here are afflicted. I'm also glad to read comments from such knowledgeable people. You're all very on point with the causes and terminology.
