The PS5 would cut off the sales of the PS4. It would still have legs, no doubt, but why bother when you can just wait until the sales slow down by themselves, then release the PS5? A PS5 launch too early would mean a lot of potential sales lost.

Because you're not an asshole bent on holding back progress at all costs? Sometimes I like to hope good things.

Why would it lose them sales? I don't get that part. It would lose them sales on PS4 Pro and PS4 but those will go directly to the PS5, in addition to all the double dippers.

When the Xbox One X was announced the Xbox One sales slowed down massively. The moment a new consoles is announced and it sounds promising, gamers start saving and waiting for the new, latest and greatest. Why buy a console that will be obselete in 6, 9 or 12 months time. The way console manufacturers keep sales off current gen up, is by dropping the price. The pattern is announce new console at very high prices, drop prices of current consoles, to keep the sales ticking over. Hopefully economies of scale mean they don't lose too much money with that current gen price drop.

Both systems will be built from the ground up.

  • What that means is - at least in Sony's console(s) – there won't be any AMD parts for example. It will be a totally unique system with it's own architecture. There's a very strong reason behind this firstly questionable decision. By sticking to the AMD parts / PC architecture, Sony would not have been able to make/sell a console that is capable of running games as they wanted – at least for a reasonable price.

yea, I don't think there is a snowballs chance in hell for that to be true

Sony doesn't have the know how to develop a CPU/GPU that is up to the standards AMD can deliever for a 2019/20 console and even if they had the right people it would take an absurd amount of research/money to catch up and overtake AMD in that regard

additionally b/c becomes far too complicated if they change the architecture again, so I'm very certain they will stick to AMD and have easy PS4 b/c

I don't doubt PS5 development is well under way I do doubt the 2019 release date though as they have no reason to rush out new hardware given their standing in the market right now, they'd take their time and aim for late 2020 imo.

BS......

I expeft first beta dev kits to be sent out around 2019.... but thos kits wont be running final hardware. Thats usualy how these things go.

Its also arpund these times that certain devs start makimg "next gen" requests..... also around this time we see some next gen video from unreal showcasing what to expwct from unreal 5.......

all those things I expect to happen next year for a PS5 reveal in 2020.

No way..late 2020 is my guess.

There definitely isn't any logic for Sony to canibalise their excellent PS4/PS4 Pro sales by announcing a new console. Sony make some stupid mistakes, but thankfully less than other console manufacturers. They learnt a LOT from the PS3 debacle.

I give this rumour roughly a 0.1% chance of being true.

(Then again, I also gave my football club FcBasel a 0.1% chance of winning the CL game against Manchester City, in Manchester. And lol what happened last evening...)
The basic reason why there won't be a PS5 in early 2019 is very simple. All chips would have long been ordered by now. And such huge chip orders would send shockwaves through the semiconductor community. They also trace every shipment of cpu parts to Indian test sites, for example. Said community has not heard a peep. This kills any early 2019 rumours right out of the gate.

PS5 fully backward compatible with PS1...PS4? Forget that right away. Unlike Microsoft, Sony does not have the manpower to write such software (which is considerably more complex than the X360 bc software due to the Cell).
Also an 8core Zen+ is 65-95W. Good luck marrying this with a 10TF AMD gpu which draws another 200+W.

You see Sony decides when gen starts when you see Unreal using PS numbering for their unreal engines.

Why would you buy a console that's outdated in just three years? The lifespam of consoles should last as long as possible, to to make the most out of the existing hardware and to show a decent jump in technology instead of a small upgrade when the next generation comes out.

And sales-wise, Sony would want to sell the PS4 to as many people as they possibly can before moving on, to maximize profits.

So you think there are people out there who think about buying a PS4 and then don't buy anything because Sony just released a better model? So that poor guy will have to not ever play video games again. How does that logic work?

If PS5 actually releases in 2019 it won't make the PS4 suddenly obsolete. The PS4 has been out by then for more than 5 years and will still receive games for at least another year or two. How is 7 years of lifetime for a gadget bad? So bad that people will not buy anything from that brand ever again?

Is that why people never buy phones, TVs or PC hardware? Because they release upgrades every year? The release cycle of consoles is already a complete joke compared to any other technology. Couldn't it be that maybe it wouldn't hurt the console business at all if there if there was more competition in the form of regular upgrades?
