Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Dualshockers: Nintendo Switch Sold Over 3,800,000 Units in Japan in its first year.

Full title: Nintendo Switch Sold Over 3,800,000 Units in Japan in its First Year; Triples the PS4’s Debut Year.

Some parts from the article:

Today Media Create released its weekly charts updated to March 4th, and adding the results to historical data, we finally know how many Switch units Nintendo sold in Japan in its first year on the local shelves.

Counting the 45,083 units sold last week, the total count is now at 3,802,910 which is definitely remarkable, especially since for most of the year the console has been hard to find in the country.

This is some amazing news. Japan has really embraced the hybrid console. This ensures Japanese support for years to come.

That's impressive considering Switch had more competition than PS4 during their first years.

Wow. It's selling really well in Japan.

How much did 3ds do first year in Japan?

Just over 4 million. Much lower priced of course.

Yeah, it's a no brainer it'll pass PS4 probably by year's end. In Japan at most. Very impressive.

You should add to the thread title that this is for the first year. The timeframe is the reason why it's relevant as a thread.

Done it.

With this kind of numbers, how long is it going to take to beat its competition? There are around 6.5m PS4s, 5.4m Vitas and 23m 3DS in Japan, according to VGChartz. The Switch should be able to beat PS4 numbers around summer of 2019, and Vita's around this year's Christmas. The 3DS is going to be a tough nut to crack, the Switch will need a pricecut or another model to try and beat those numbers.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

VGC has the Wii U at 1.26m LTD for the week ending December 8th 2013.
VGC has the 3DS at 5.13m LTD for the week ending February 26th 2012.
VGC has the Wii at 3.95m LTD for the week ending December 2nd 2007.
VGC has the DS at 3.91m LTD for the week ending December 4th 2005.

Switch comfortably places in the top 3 of the last 5 Nintendo consoles by all reasonable accounts.

How does it compare to other consoles, like Sony's?

That, and Pokemon, exclusive Monster Hunter, and maybe rejuvenate Yokai Watch :P
