You guys really need to get on top of those tags on avatars, they're becoming messy and completely disorganised, I really feel bad for any new members coming into VGchartz because they are almost an inside joke rather than a way to actually tell peoples roles on the site.

Is there any of the ambassadors left doing that role? See Conegamer is marked as one but not been online in almost a year, has it been that long since someone paid any interest to the ambassador program as to review them? What is a "beta tester" surely any supporter should have that tag as well if it's referring to the website since they use the redesigned front page...

Even in this thread alone you have "Gay Triarchy" "Rueple" and "Backseat moderator" worked onto avatars do you guys honestly not see any way that a new user to the forum would be confused seeing these?

Also.... I was wrong to make this post in this thread, but felt it on topic to again the inside chuckle here at "as long as it confuses users to thinking X is doing Y role"

Let me have my tags. They are descriptive and I do my best to live up to them.

If a new user gets confused by them, they can simply ask me. I am backseat moderator, after all.

New users shouldn't have to consult you about a confusing tag you've amended to your avatar, there is nothing special about you to expect new people to come to you as a gatekeeper for an explanation of your tags, if everyone done that the place would be bedlam.

You have a tag which literally suggests you have been appointed by the site to have the role of someone who can break forum rule 9 (c+d) do you not see any possible issues with that? Think about it, a new user might see your tags and think that backseat moderation is something which can be rewarded with a tag for their avatar if they are good enough at doing it...

  • Backseat Moderating in the forums will also be treated as spamming, as it will derail the topic and conversation of the thread. You are not a moderator, so if you do feel like a user is breaking the rules, report them and move on. Let the mod team handle moderation.
  • Examples of backseat moderating include statements like "Reported." "You should be banned for that." "I give you a week tops." "I've been banned for less." and the like.

Dear lord do I understand the irony of this post, and for that I'm sorry!

No, I mean the other kind of community tags.

....

Yes, those ones x'D.

I legitimately didn't know if there was a gay community on here who distributed edited avatars for their user base or if it was people just doing it themselves, like I said I find the fact that any user puts anything on their avatar in an attempt to feign a site based role is a terrible thing, if you walked into Tesco with a mock tesco manager name badge and started talking to customers wearing it you would be asked to remove it or leave, I don't understand the site allowing people to throw together mock up tags.

Well, I think it's obvious that Gay Triarchy doesn't have any official rolle/meaning.

Dude, you're really thinking that the new user base here is way more stupid than they are ;-D

Of course, but maybe an idea would be to add something near all users avatars sort of like we have on the profile page which says your current mood or feelings, that way people could add whatever they wanted into a designated portion of their avatar which wasn't on the same area as things such as moderator (just make it aligned on the right side or w/e) and that way there would be a uniform place were people could be rueples or gaytriarcys all day if they wanted without it being in the way of the actual forums user types.

That is a very strong possibility! But you have to keep in mind those tags are a part of the site and there to help users in general know who they can message, what is to stop someone from just taking and using whatever tag they want, say the supporter tag which implies donating money to the site, can be copy pasted onto an avatar in a second, the ambassador tag which was created as a way for new users to know who to listen to regarding taking advice in certain threads on here.... that tag can just be stuck onto whatever avatar and you can start spouting shite to people as though you were that role.

I'm holding my face after I typed the last bit... I know I'm coming off badly from this because it might appear that I'm overly invested in such a small thing, I'm just trying to play the devils advocate and point out that for certain people looking at the site from the outside, the way some users are making "community" tags is not really helpful.

See maybe this was in the right thread, I can admit being wrong to caring about this as much as I do lol, perhaps I should just ignore it!

I thought about this.

That is hilarious but obviously annoying for the shop and the customers in there, but basically it's exactly what I'm trying to get at here, if you impersonate people who are doing a job / role then of course it will be confusing for people around you.

My tags were given to me by administrators.

That makes it only more confusing then, as they aren't actual forum types or user types I mean. Meaning that someone who is an administrator has marked you as a bannable offense on the site and a Russian currency?

I am backseat moderator because I am a good backseat moderator.

Ruepel (or more accurately, Rüpel) is a German word. The Russian currency is ruble. Rüpel describes a person with no manners, so you can look at it as being blunt and honest in addressing topics and people.

EDIT: Rüpel also comes with negative connotations, such as overwhelming impoliteness.

Oh right I always just thought it was the Russian currency and that it held no real meaning, but again getting yourself tagged in this case with 2 negatives isn't really a great thing.

Being a good backseat moderator sounds strange when it comes to a site where there is literally 2 rules which say don't backseat moderate, it would be like giving someone a tag for trolling and commending them as being a good troll in threads where trolling needs to be done, you must understand that you are tagged as being good at something which is reportable (again... I see the irony in talking about it but I'm not trying to backseat mod you I'm just wondering if you can see it from my point of view).

I'll be honest about you, a lack of manners is not a way I would describe your posts on here, often when I see you jump into an argument which is going on between two or more people you tend to go about it rather level headed and calmly explain why people should drop a certain subject or so, I wouldn't consider blunt and honest to mean not having manners.

The above users went far off-topic and should receive either bans or warnings, at the very least.

...Can I get a Backseat Moderator tag now?

I have a sense of irony, so having tags with negative connotations doesn't bother me. Rüpel was added via my personal request. Backseat moderator wasn't something that I requested, that was slapped on me because it was deemed fitting. It happened right after I had asked to get more tags and my personal suggestions were Esel, Hanswurst and Tunichtgut, none of which are positive things. But they are all German words, so the administrator wasn't aware of what they mean.

I can see it from your point of view, but here I have to say that there's a flaw in your point of view and that is the belief that backseat moderating is inherently bad. Then again, in your final paragraph you provide an example of how backseat moderating can be a good thing. If a community can moderate itself, there are quicker solutions to (potential) conflicts, so less work for the actual moderators and more enjoyable discussions for the other regular members who participate in a thread.

I agree with you that backseat modding in ways is a good idea (I've personally jumped on a few grenades were people were going at each others throats, either in threads or by pming one or both people and saying they'd be better off dropping it) but right now the way the rules sit it's put as being spam and reportable in and of itself so your tag says one thing but that thing has been stigmatised by the rules here to suggest a negative where you're doing it in a positive. Much like if someone here says Fanboy as a negative but I think that word has been ruined by people throwing it as an insult but I'm happy to be called a fanboy of some of the things I'm a fan of like gaming in general.

edit - Perhaps the Ambassador tag would be more fitting for you, like... you know the way things work around here and if you tell people who are arguing that they're going to get moderated if they keep at it... that was sort of what I seen the original meaning of the Ambassador tag to mean, people to listen to for advice to basically become better users?

Rambling......

Sorry!
