Forums - Sales - Amazon U.S. February bestsellers and general Amazon-based discussion

The whole bias discussion makes no sense because Amazon only gives rankings, not quantities.

On COMG we can tell if there is a bias because they dont only tell us the rankings but also the exact number of pre-orders so we can compare that to actual sales.

On Amazon we have no idea how close each ranking is in terms of units sold. For example

January Amazon rankings
NSW-13, 17
PS4-34, 53, 63
XBO-52, 68, 85

13 & 17 could be 8000 & 7000 units for a total of 15,000

34, 53 & 63 could be 5500, 4500 & 2500 for a total of 12,500

52, 68 & 85 could be 4700, 2300 & 2000 for a total of 9000.

Now lets say NPD figures for January are

NSW-300k
PS4-250k
XBO-180k

That would make the Amazon % of NPD totals the same for each console which would result in no bias.

Thankyou! Its soo easy to understand but some people are just..........

Nobody????

The problem with what you are asking, and btw this is not only limited to your post as I have seen others try to do the same, is that Amazon rankings by nature are ordinal data. Ordinal data gives us the order of how each SKU is doing but it does not give us distances. Thus, we cannot predict exact sales numbers based on it. Beyond that we also do not know how much the sales would be if we combine the various SKUs together, again because we lack exact unit numbers.

Well you see everything ranked in the top 100. Make an educated guess. You have 100 ranked items to gauge your estimates off. Plus if you see 2 or 3 bundles for 'Y' before a bundle for console 'X', then that should indicate that console 'Y' is selling at least 2 or 3 times more than that 1 bundle for console 'X'.

You don't really have to think to hard about it to get an idea.

I think you're looking at it too simplified. Even without trying you can make a basic analysis. How many people have we seen on here saying how Switch is crushing or dominating. That's a basic analysis but a conclusion some have come to without delving in to far.

Damn that 15$ discount put Zelda in top 3 and now its out of stock.

I don't even think it needs a price drop. It's always high up the charts.

Well it doesn't but amazon did made a (probably limited) discount and in hours its now out of stock.

Which is crazy for a game that came out a year ago.

No, its the opposite, you are the one over simplifying.

You are saying since it ranks far higher than that means it should sell far higher but its impossible to know how much higher without actual quantities.

For all we know #1 on the monthly rankings could have 10,000 sales while #50 has 5,000 sales in which case a console ranking at #10 and one at #30 would not have a huge difference.
