I think it dates back even to the days of 2014. Remember that one Japanese Direct they hosted? Most thought it wouldn't lead to much until they showed the New 3DS and New 3DS XL for the first time along with Shulk being confirmed for Smash Bros. (plus having his game being exclusive to the New 3DS systems). And it was unbelievable at the time when they first showed Cloud being confirmed for Smash Bros. despite having little to no history with Nintendo as a character. Sure it was Sakurai's game but it was Nintendo's IP.

so maybe the direct truly is just going to be dropped at any moment tomorrow now, and honestly at this point Nintendo doesn't even really need to announce it after the past few days so it would probably work

A company who was in the sex business and had ties to the yakuza 100 years ago and make games for kids and adults today can make a small change for the way how they announce a direct. What i mean is it is not Unbelievable compared to the change of a company in 100 years.
