Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo stop liscensing last gen ports!

Nintendo will never do this, they are now getting third parties to make games for them again and i don't think they want to lose that.

Many many fans today view one of the Wii's biggest problems to be that alot of the publishers simply develope games for the PlayStation2 and port them to the Nintendo Wii. This is a smart buisness move because it enables the publisher to hit all of the next generation consoles as well as the last generation remaining console.

However in most cases two versions of the game are made. One version for X-Box 360 and one version for PlayStation2. These versions are then ported the 360 version onto the PlayStation3 and the PlayStation2 version onto the Nintendo Wii.

The major problem with that is the fact that Microsoft and Sony get not only graphically superior versions but the Wii's power is rarely ever utalized in the port. The PlayStation2 game is often ported directly to the Wii with a couple control changes.

Would it be in Nintendo's best intrest to ban and stop liscensing last generation ports. This would apply pressure to developers to improve their Wii versions as well as discourage support of the PlayStation 2 which would benefit Nintendo. Rather then using last generation engines developers would be incouraged to develope the Wii versions from the ground up for the Wii and not use any recycled material.

As consumers we would also benefit. Because a 360 version can't really be downgraded and ported to the Wii easily. This means the Wii version is built from the ground up to provide a unique experiance as well as optimal use of the Nintendo Wii's capabilities.

Is it time for Nintendo to put anend to last generation ports. To tell developers either you make the game for PS2 or the Wii but you don't make a game on PS2 and port it to Wii!

The thing is...........................Nintendo has done something similar to this before. Back in the days before the nes the console market was collapsing again, and again. The reason for this was the mass number of low quality games. Now our friends nintendo had a limit on the number of games a 3rd party could put on their console, and the quality of the games. Pretty soon 3rd parties were like"Whatever" then when our other friend sony came along they left nintendo. So nintendo lost all of it's 3rd party support , because of this limiting. This effected nintendo for 10yrs. What makes you think that they will do it again? I believe they should make it so multiplat games are designed on the wii rather on the ps2 than ported to the wii. Now games that come on the ps2 only could be ported to the wii such as the wonderful game Okami, but not multiplats on all consoles. So that is just how I think nintendo should solve this porting problem.

You state that as if it were a bad thing. Nintendo's move towards quality control is often credited with ending the collapse of the games industry. Infact the move is credited often with saving the industry and showing that you couldn't just flood the market with crappy games.

The Atari, Colleco and Intellivision consoles were flooded with ports and crappy quality games. These games caused a fallout in the industry. Great games would get passed over in a flood of crappy ports and the poor quality games would end up selling decent numbers. However do to the flood of crappy games the consoles began to falter.

The solid good games stopped selling sufficient numbers and developers turned to cheaper and smaller teams. Look at what happened with intelivision. The developement teams got split and made smaller and smaller to produce more and more games. This was intended to allow the developers a greater ability to compete.

Well today the same thing is happening on the Wii. Developers are cutting budgets and developer sizes to produce more and more Wii/PS2 games as possible. The market once again is getting flooded and well i can say hey I love Nintendo's first party games and the odd third party game. The good games are loosing sales to cheaply made games like CarnivalGames.

When developers see cheaply made ports and cheaply developed titles selling well they inturn cut budgets and split teams to produce as many as possible!

One last-gen title that I wish would be ported to the Wii is Black. It was a FPS on PS2 and the original Xbox (may have been on the Cube but i'm not sure). Had no multiplayer so in the wake of Halo 2 it got completely tossed to the side but it was quite a blast to play. Plus the lack of a solid FPS is one of the glaring omissions in the Wii's library so I think the demand could be there and it could sell decently.

I'm one of those who's tired of franchise milking (which we all know Nintendo does shamelessly) and wasting time on porting older games to newer gen systems. The time and resources should be put toward creating new IPs/franchises and advancing in programming techniques. Why the hell did we spend money on a next gen console when the thing is hardly reaching half its potential?

Well back then it was a good thing, but now the market is more collapse proof so I could see it as a bad thing. The difference also is those systems had NO good games at all while the wii has about 20 quality titles. Now nintendo may have saved the market , but by doing this they lost all the 3rd party support they had. Now nintendo is starting to get more 3rd party support than they did back then. They don't want to ruin this in any possible way, and by doing they will just irritate 3rd parties again, and go back to the bottom.

I'm sorry , but I fail to see what that has to do with 3rd parties, and ps2 ports.

I apologize for not making my message clear. I agree that porting last gen games to new gen consoles, such as what they've done with Rockstar's "Bully" and Capcom's rehashing of past Resident Evil titles, only with a Wii control scheme, is ridiculous. It does nothing to progress the industry or evolution of the Wii platform. Porting hardly manages to fully take advantage of a system's resources or its advantages. That's what I was trying to say, and the Capcom thing is just milking RE.

Shouln't have bought the Wii if you wanted a large library of quality games. That's what happens when you buy something just because it's the cool thing to buy and because others are doing it. Buy the console that has games you want to play. If you're not happy with the Wii's library, you should not have bought it.

How do you get away with stuff like this without getting banned? He didn't even neccesarily say he doesn't like the Wii's library, just that he's sick of all the PS2 ports. Kind of like how you could love a game but be annoyed by one specific character. Just an aspect of the whole, and he's suggesting a tentative solution.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Oh sorry for not understanding your previous post.  Some I would like to add though. Wii fans aren't angry, because of games coming from last gen that were decent or amazing. Re4 with the wii controls is like a brand new game to me. I played the game on  gamecube , but the wii version is amazing. You picked the worst examples to show the ports as bad. Wii fans are angry , because new games that come on all consoles are usually just being ported from ps2 to the wii. The controls usually sucked until recently, and the graphics are very limited , because of the ps2s hardware. Imagine this let's say the 360 or ps3 whichever one you prefer more is being ported a  wii game as a multiplat. The distance in graphical capabilities between the ps2 , and the wii is about the difference between the wii , and the hd consoles. Now if you see the console not even being utilized to 10% of what it's capable of damn right you will be angry. This is what I want nintendo to keep from developers doing. Developers should at least update the graphics of the wii version if they are going to port it.

The funny thing about it is RoTB has a wii despite not liking the wii's library and tells JoelCool7 this "If you're not happy with the Wii's library, you should not have bought it."
