Forums - Gaming - Gears criticised for stereotyping

People who go this pscho on stereotypes are simply segregating races from eachother which is not needed at all. If the first thing you notice and care about when you see a video game character is the colour of their skin then id say your more racist than the game designers.

Real world doesn't helps against stereotyping either...

...especially considering the guy has sold millions of CDs, that he has his own game that further reinforces the stereotype, and that the aforementioned game is a million seller...

...and has a sequel releasing this Fall.

hopfult the aim of the game is to shoot him in the face 7 times!!! XD

So you're telling me 18-25 males can't handle intelligent black men or complex stories and characters. I for one, resent this. Developers don't need to focus on games for girls, they just need to stop being covertly racist. That's what everyone needs to do if we are going to move toward that "ideal" world you speak of.

The average 18-25 male in the US doesn't read much beyond sports magazines.  This is why the American Booksellers Association has retargeted most of their adult-fiction shelf space for female readers starting about 30 years ago.  It's an ugly fact, but I can't do anything about that, so this is going to be a factor for any games publisher.

However, just because it's a factor doesn't mean 18-25 year old American men can't appreciate a good story or complex characters, just that a very large percentage also enjoy role-playing as characters that don't reflect their own lives.  I've been involved in software design and engineering for the past 28 years... do you really think I want to buy a game where I role-play a character who gets up every morning, drives the kids to school, sits behind a computer screen for 8-10 hours, drives home, eats dinner, etc?  Uh, no.  I want to be an archer or a swordsman or a government agent on an adventure with no real-life ramifications for my actions in the game, i.e. - if I die in the game I want to be able to reload and try again, not get buried and that to be the end of it.  I have to deal with real-life limitations all the time... games are about being able to do things that are very very difficult, rarely available, or impossible in real life.

There's nothing wrong with putting sophisticated, intelligent characters in video games (Mass Effect does this very well), as long as the context allows for it.  I thought Gears of War was about hardened soldiers who's natural ability to survive and training allows them to triumph over evil in the end.  Would I rather have Cole or a brilliant scientist in the trenches with me in that scenario?  What do *you* think?

This has nothing to do with reading.  Vidoe games are much more like movies, another industry that targets that demographic.  This also has nothing to do with boring games, or life-like games with life-like limitations.  I made no statements about any of that.

Cole doesn't need to be a brilliant scientist, but there is also no reason for him to act like a gangbanger.  A game can be fun without the stupid racist stereotypes.

@fazz In what way does past convictions define what they are now ? It's lifestyles they had and aren't associated with anymore. None of the above have served anything above a year in prison.

I wouldn't make my mind up about white American blond girls based on Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan , how is 50 cent and Snoop Dog supposed to be representative of the typical black American ?

If Paris Hilton started talking about how she was gangster and a real thug boasting about her past criminal convictions you'd agree it was justification enough ?

If Paris Hilton said how stupid and shallow she was, I'd believe her right away.

And it's not about if they really are or what not. It's about how they feel/are-in the need to fuel and live up to that stereotype (that some of those guys actually fill quite right), and how thanks to people like them, it spread to things like  videogames.

Time to Work !

ok Iam tired of the stereotypical fat Italian plumber! OPPPSSS Wrong thread.

Seriouly this guy works at a gamestudio make an IP staring Denzel Washington as a tough cop on the edge cool and calm against a hord of white and black hooligans who are ruining thier city in gang warfare and Denzel has to make them all get along!

Ya there will have to be some serius killing and stuff but that sells games!

as for gangs and stereotypical male types we could use a cholo or a biker or an asian dude or crip or a blood!

all of which dont represent they're entire culture. or how about the female lead super busty with her arse crack hangin out?????

still if you make games and your tired of something make an alternative that doesnt suck!

regardless of stereotype people need to stop being stereotypical and feeding those thoughts! like someone said earlier there's a reason for it!

how about the typical wrestler with tiny shorts and big muscles! oh ya thats a profession and they get paid to dress like that!

Stereotypical Golfer??????

LOL

People should stop complaining about things they don't like in games and go kayaking or something.

Same writer has poked at RE5 now...again.

http://kotaku.com/378535/clearly-no-one-black-worked-on-this-game

It's such bullshit I can't even take it.

Clearly a zombie outbreak in HAITI, where nearly everyone has dark skin, there should be tons of white zombies as well.

And the fact that you're shooting up black zombies makes the game racist. And the fact that you don't see the racism in the trailer makes you a racist.

WTF. The fact that you bring up the racism and the fact that everyone's black makes you the racist...I don't see why we can't just play the damn game and not bring race into everything.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Alright I think this is kinda moving away from the main point. 50 Cent , Snoop Dog ETC in no way represent the black african american male , they are as representative of the typical black african american male as Paris Hilton and Linzy lohan is of the typical white american female. Regardless of whether 50 Cent is a real gangster , whether he feels he is a gangster it does in no way shape or form define what the rest of the african american community is.

Black people in game's are often portrayed as Pimps,Gangsters and what not , All I'm saying is that they should be given a more diverse range of roles in games Intellectuals , Assertive Team Leaders , Main Characters even , we have intelctual black leaders in real life , why not represent this in games?
