Forums - Gaming - Gears criticised for stereotyping

These sort of people complaining about these sort of things need to get a life. A game is a game and Cole Train in Gears of War is a cool character.

I'm with you on this one.  When Cole came onto the scene I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking "here is one tough dude that's going to help us kick the enemy's collective butts."

I never hear people complain about how dads are typically cast as bumbling boobs on almost every sitcom these days, but at least Cole is a cool character with a lot of courage and determination.

Really dont care anymore not that first game we have been stereotyped. The situation is worse for women.

How dare those awful game developers make fictional games that don't represent the real world.

The thing is, stereotypes are all over the real world.  This crap is very commonplace and needs to change.  Just because most people don't recognize it, especially those in the majority, doesn't mean it doesn't exist or is unimportant.  Seeing this stuff everyday affects you on a level you may not even notice, but it still affects you.

Morgan Gray, senior producer at Crystal Dynamics, has said he's fed up with all the stereotypical black characters appearing in games - singling out Gears of Wars' Cole Train as a prime example.

His comments came in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, currently running a series of features about black professionals working in the games industry.

"I am sick of playing the average white dude character. I’m just done with it. And I’m sick of playing a black stereotype," Gray stated.

"There's no reason that Marcus Fenix in Gears of War couldn't have been a black guy... Cole Train on his own, no harm no foul. But what is Cole Train? Cole Train is basically like every other effin’ black character in a video game. Like here comes the urban stereotype.

"Where is this 1990s - not even 2000 - black slang, where does this fit in this futuristic world that doesn’t even take place on Earth? They go really far to do a lot of fictional justifications for this culture that they’ve built, and they go right back to this urban stereotype for the black character."

Gray was keen to point out he was not attacking Epic Games, saying he thinks Gears of War is "fun and gorgeous". However, he added, "It’s just a lack of thought, right? All it does is reinforce dumb stereotypes and it sort of reinforces casual racism. It’s almost like, 'Cue the drum beat, here comes the black character.'"

He also had a few things to say about the work of Japanese developers: "Their take on black folks in games has generally been poor. It’s either been here’s this ’70s pimp, here’s ultra hip-hop dude, or here’s a straight-up thug.

"F***ing Barret in Final Fantasy VII - they put a gun on the guy’s arm. It’s just like, 'Yeah, black guy with built-in gun.' Okay, that’s really, really weird. So it’s generally been s*** characterisations that are way racist or way just hokey racist."

For more from Gray, including what he thinks about Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and the Resident Evil 5 trailer, read the full interview.

This guys needs to take a deep breath and realize that most video game writers are hacks and that 90% of all the characters are stereotypes.

Bitch at the industry for continuing to fail as storytellers on a grand level. Don't nitpick over race.

I know that is sarcasm WoW but he has a point. Omac that is a damned good example. Grey Fox and Fortune from MGS come to mind as well. They don't come off as the typical stereotypes to me. Although he was a boxer, I liked Dudley from SF3 because he was a stuffy, rich, English black guy. Now Dee Jay on the other hand...

Edit: Forgot about Barret, it wasn't the gun on that pissed me off about Barret. That fact that he talked like ghetto hood when no one else on the planet did, not even the people from his hometown, did bug me.

His point is that game developers put a lot of time and thought into creating their fictional worlds but rarely think to feature a black protagonist. I think that's true.

This is all so hilarious. The developer decides to cast the hero as hispanic, and people are complaining that the main character isn't black. Sheesh. If he was black, then there would be people complaining that he wasn't female, etc., etc.

Is it really the developer's job to make sure everyone has a warm and fuzzy regarding how they perceive their own place in life? I thought it was to make kick butt games with engaging characters. Why doesn't someone with an African American heritage start a dev house and make games with black protagonists? That's what I would do if I was really bothered about that sort of thing. Then again, if the games didn't sell well there would be a lot of complaining about racist consumers.

Yeah, you are right Crumas2, Gears wasn't the best example. Dom was an awesome character and most definitely NOT a stereotype.

I thought Marcus Fenix was supposed to be hispanic as well, but of course I could be wrong.

Lol...people get so caught up over the portrayal of a black in a game.

Ever watch a Black Tv show? usually there is only 1 white guy who is portrayed as an idiot.

Is the game REALLY stereotyping? i wouldn't say so. Go up to any random black person and have them talk, i guarantee more than 3/4ths will talk like Cole in Gears of War. (heck there are 3 in my class who talk EXACTLY like that). It's not a stereotype if its a fact.

Whoa, easy there, tiger. Most of the black people I know do not talk like that.
