In light of DF's analysis I think XBC2 suffered a bit from a strict deadline and the devs still figuring out the hardware as they went along. Their second Switch project should hopefully be more polished.

Polished or not, I am loving the game. I would rather have Monolith come out with a new game every couple years of this quality than worry about some extra polish and it take say 4 years.

Oh I agree, I loathe delays and long dev times, so I'm happy we got it now in its current form.

Yeah, nah. This isn't PS3 graphics. You could point to certain minor assets in the game and say that they wouldn't look out of place on PS3, but the scale, lighting, foliage, effects, etc all together are well beyond what PS3 could do.

It isn't just memory steaming that is tanking the framerate.
The game is just too big for the standard Switch.

I don't think that's the case; granted I'm only in chapter 3 but so far it's not as "big" as Breath of the Wild which was designed for the weaker Wii U. I hardly think XBC2 is the limit of what the Switch hardware can accomplish given its a first year title.

If it had a 4 year development cycle, it would have come out mid next year.
Not a big deal for a more polished end product.

I would put Xenoblade 2 above any PS3 title out there.
The only thing close would be Metal Gear Solid V, but even that seems to fall short (on PS3).
Oh, and look at that framerate:

Also Xenoblade 2 runs at a higher res.

I was not talking about the size being an issue (though I cannot deny I should have used more accurate wording).
Xenoblade 2 drops frames when I am doing larger combos, which would seem to indicate a GPU bottleneck.
Given a few more years I am sure we will see more impressive games, running on more optimised engines.
For now: Xenoblade seems to max out the the Switch in a few instances, given the circumstances.

I'd still rather have it now as it is, than wait another 6 months for a little extra polish. They can still patch it.

I guess it depends what we mean by "max out". I mean it more in the sense of getting the maximum performance out of the hardware through extremely optimized code and getting the most bang out of every cycle, not just in the sense that of feeding the hardware code until it chokes.

The Switch maxes out hardware wise, the software is what holds more potential.

Games only get reviewed once; games only have one launch.
Having a smooth day one experience can help the game generate more sales.

I won't be playing the game in 6 months, but I would have played it 6 months from now if that was the launch day.
My opinion of the game: five years from now will be shaped by the launch day experience; if the game was more polished I would remember it more fondly.

It is very unlikely that this game will be re-dubbed and re-synced in a patch.
The Switch does not have much storage space; developers cannot easily take the: "fix it later" method they currently enjoy on other platforms.

The Wii U destroyed any patience I used to have for games being delayed.  A few years ago I would've said wait til the game is perfect, but now I just want them at the promised date, I don't care if they have minor polish issues.

It's bizarre cause I've seen this with other games too on PS4 and Xbone.  It seems some developers have gotten it in their head that we would rather see the game finish loading before our very eyes instead of have like 2 seconds more loading screen time.

So I started playing it on the TV and when I went into mobile mode it really did put me off because it was such a drastic drop in overall quality. However I don't know if a patch was done in the background or what but it no longer bugs me at all and I really do enjoy having it play next to me while working having my party grind out fights and I REALLY enjoy playing for a half an hour in bed before I go down.

XCX will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first RPG that actually provided me the scale I used to day dream about as a kid. However XC2 does look and play better and fixes all those little issues I had before. Frankly it's an amazing game and I am loving it at 32 hours in. If you like fantasy, you'll love this.

yeh ...all the performance issues are just folk being nitpicky
