Forums - Gaming - Belgium says loot boxes are gambling, wants them banned in Europe

It's a first step, but in the right direction. Gaming and gambling shouldn't be mixed.

I wonder, tho, how this could end. If the European Comission aligns with Belgium, games with loot boxes could not be banned, but restricted to +18 customers and also regulate where they could be sold, like in casinos or in separate zones of videogame stores to keep underage children from having access to them.

Disney can't really be liking the fact that EA have managed to pull one of their most lucrative IP's into the middle of a debate about pushing gambling on kids... just one month before the launch of the billion dollar hit The Last Jedi

I'm fine with this, if companies want to include gambling slot machines and rubbish into their games, I wont buy them, but as long as the games rating reflects that it contains gambling (i.e. have an M rating) then fine, work away and see what happens to your profits when parents are wondering why they're being asked to come to the counter with their kids to buy Fifa and have it explained to the parents... "yeah basically... this is 18s because it contains a gambling system in it" Happy days.

This is great news. If the rest of the world were to follow this then this sort of game practice will no longer exist and us gamers would be able to enjoy the games better.

Let's hope that Disney takes the Star Wars franchise to a decent developer. That won't happen though

It's very unlikely indeed, but it does mean that they will have QA members from Disney there riding EA's ass at every step for their next games to at least make sure they aren't going to be creating the first M rated bit of star wars merch.

Go Belgium go!

Down with all paid lootboxes! The mechanic can work nicely if it's fully free (without the option to purchase them). Microtransactions should be limited to buying specific items. That also means Overwatch should get in line, no exeptions!

I wonder where they were with mobile games? I'm totally against lootboxes and I'm glad people are talking about cracking down on it but I find it really odd people are talking about it now.

It took enough time for the companies to creep up to the line of F&@% OFF for people to actually care.
