It would be better, but only because of what Playtonic brought to the table .... mediocrity.
I don't think Retro Studios wants to make another donkey kong though, so in the long run it wouldn't be worth it.
Would the people at Playtonic have been better off joining Retro Studios? | |||

Could you at least be a bit more positive about it? |
Uh....no? You asked for my opinion. Lol.
It really depends on how flexible the Playtonic members are. Because, weren't there members of Retro that left once they were done with Metroid Prime? It seems like the core of Retro is constantly trying to move on from "just handling" one franchise, and some of their key members end up leaving because of that. I think they're done with Donkey Kong for now honestly.
Too many factors for example some notable designers/developers of old lost a bit of their spark as times goes on we've seen this in Miyamoto, Molyneux, Spectre etc... it can be be potentially good if they've retained their consisntency but the problem is as Banjo Threeie showed they probably haven't despite it being a fairly decent game, even the Goldeneye team who went on to form Free Radical declined with Haze sending them under.
The's also a consideration you have to factor in Nintendo had a direct hand in many of Rare's games anyway so what made Rare inspirational likely stayed with Nintendo to pass on to Retro anyway which would call into question whether such acquisitions are adding an asset or dead weight to the studio.
