Hopefully opening new studios gather than aquiring. I'd like to see something Japanese.

If that means more competition for Sony and more PC games I'm all for it. But it's not like they say this the first time.

Well. They are bringing Age of Empires back from the ashes, so I am happy about that.

They need exclusives though... Buying out other games/developers/franchises isn't the right way to go about it in my opinion... Build up something fresh, new and original.

Cancelling Scalebound was a big mistake.
Where is Microsoft's competitor to StarCitizen? They have the Freelancer I.P.
Do something with the Fable I.P.
Stop wasting Kameo.
Do something with Perfect Dark.
Bring back Viva Pinata.
Banjo Kazooi could be rebooted.
What about Black and White?
Mechwarrior and MechCommander?

Microsoft has the potential to make some truly great games... And they don't even need to be graphics powerhouses as Minecraft is a testament to.

If they reboot the Flight Simulator franchise properly this time, too, I'll be really excited.

If they feel like parodying themselves, they can meme their way to success using Clippy and Bob.

They’re making more money off Minecraft than that 2.5B would have accrued in interest sitting in the bank, which was their goal. Seems like it was a good business move.

are they though? because those 2.5B are gone now

Yeah, but if they didn’t spend it on Minecraft, it would just be sitting there in the bank. Generating roughly 25 million a year in interest. So in order for MS to come out positive, Minecraft only needs to make more than 25 million a year. Last I remember Minecraft was generating well over 100 million in profit, and that was before it really exploded merchandise wise and got Story Mode games, etc. Now there are multiple Minecraft games on every console, DLC, etc. It’s making them way more than 25 million a year.

Why didn't they do this 4 years ago? Spencer has been in charge for 4 years, and apparently he has been too busy with Xbox One X and canceling games that he forgot to do this. It takes 3-6 years to make a new AAA game, so it's going to be a long wait. And I am very sceptical about this since this information is very bare bones, and they are only talking about things they are planning to do. Feels like a typical PR statement, especially when you consider that Xbox One X just launched.

We heard the same statement in 2013 from Spencer, but nothing happened..on the contrary, MS closed more studios and canceled more games... I doubt that it will happen.

really? do you have anything to back that up? i mean the part that Microsoft takes 100M profit from Minecraft every year.

do you have any idea how many studios they could actually fund and how many new IPs 2.5B would actually fund?

instead they bought the licence for a game that pretty much everyone already played and got over years ago.

edit: even if your figures would be correct, it would take 25+ years of MS profitting 100M every single year just to break even on keeping that money under the matress. not counting inflation, etc

I feel its a little too late for this gen, but going forward into next gen could help.

Deja vu? Why do I feel like I've heard this before. They have an absolute mountain to climb on the software side I don't see them doing it.

He doesn't but it is very clear they make money and probably already made their money back.  They bought it when it was only 60 million in sales and has surpassed alteast 120 million copies (last February report) but like GTA that's not where the money comes from but insteads comes from DLC/mash packs/Monthly Realms income/merchandise etc.
